Troop 398 News - Nov 14
Nov. 17 & 18 - Backpacking at the Walls of Jericho on the AL/TN line. Great trip, plan to go Plan to be at the Eagle's Nest by 6:45 AM this Saturday. We will leave at 7:00 AM. We will return by 2:00 PM on Sunday. Bring your own food, buddy up or cook as a patrol.. If you have a tent, please bring it. If not, we'll issue you one Sat. morning. Thanks to the rain, we should have a source of water near the campsite. I would still plan to carry two quarts of water since there is no water until we get to our campsite. Temperatures should be in the 40's Sat night. If you signed up and cannot go, please email me and let me know - otherwise you (or your parents) will get a call at 6:45 AM on Sat asking where you are!
The Walls of Jericho in Jackson County, Alabama, is being called The Grand Canyon of the South. More than 10,000 hikers, amateur photographers, birdwatchers and horseback riders have explored this natural marvel since it opened in August 2004. Alabama Gov. Bob Riley officially dedicated the area in April 2005. In the late 1700s, Davy Crockett explored the area since his family owned land there. A traveling minister came upon the Walls of Jericho in the late 1800s and was so captivated by the cathedral-like beauty that he declared it needed a biblical name and the name stuck. Today, visitors continue to be drawn to the grandeur of the narrow gorge. You can travel to the bottom of its 50-yard-wide limestone bowl and look up at 200-foot-tall cliffs on each side. In a heavy rain, water shoots out of holes and cracks in the rock. Flora and fauna are abundant.
Approximately 10 miles of trails have been built to provide access to the Walls of Jericho and its waterfalls. Getting started is easy. It is a 2.5-mile hike one way, downhill to Clarke Cemetery, with an additional half mile remaining to travel into the Walls. That means the walk back will be mostly uphill and strenuous. Hikers should wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The trail is well marked and hikers have to cross several shallow streams. However, stream levels rise quickly during thunderstorms and crossing them can be hazardous due to swift currents. After a rain shower, the trail can be muddy for days. On dry days, hikers should plan on a minimum of six hours to make the round-trip, which includes a two-hour stay in the gorge.
Directions: From Nashville take I-24 east toward Chattanooga. Take exit 127 on Highway 64 and turn toward Winchester. Stay on Highway 64 for about 15 miles and turn south on Highway 16. Just after crossing into Alabama, look on the right for a gravel parking area with a yellow gate and an information kiosk. Park there and follow directions on the map at the trailhead.
FOOD FOR FAMILIES
We decided to bring any food collected to the Eagle's Nest this Sat at 6:45 AM and we'll make arrangements to get it to the collection point.

BELL BUCKLE CRAFT FAIR PARKING
This Saturday and Sunday, we will park cars at Webb School for the Bell Buckle Craft Fair. All money earned will be divided among those who work based on the hours worked. Hours worked by parents will be credited to their son's account. Wear your Class A uniform and bring a canteen and rain gear just in case. The weather looks great - a little cool in the morning and 80's during the day. This could mean a big crowd which could be good and bad. Saturday is usually a heavier day than Sunday. The fair runs Sat 9-5 and Sunday 9-4. We will need a small group there early (7AM), with others following a little later (7:30-8AM).
Driving directions: Go South on US 231 toward Shelbyville - watch for the sign to Bell Buckle you will turn left at a BP Station on to highway 82. Drive straight into town, cross the railroad tracks and continue on hwy 82 past the post office. Turn left at the Methodist Church Abernathy Street (???) and follow the "Parking " signs until you get to the Webb School Softball field where the road makes a hard left turn. Lunch (Hot Dogs) will be provided or you can chow down at one of the vendors if you bring some money.
Mr Harden and Mr. Falana will be in charge. Their cell phones are: (615) 631-0080 and (615) 289-1164. The plan is to travel up and back on your own. Parents usually like to browse through the craft exhibits. If you need a ride, or if you have not signed up, contact Mr. Harden or Mr Falana

EAGLE SERVICE PROJECT - HELP NEEDED
Message from Jake Shaw:
I'm having a work day on my eagle scout project this Sat., starting around 8:00 AM and ending probably around 1:00 or 2:00 depending on how much we can get done. I am building a gazebo in the courtyard of Riverdale high school in memory of Jordan Hendorson, a buddy of mine that died this summer. The structure is built already but we need to do some landscaping, and everything needs to be water proofed and sealed up. I have all of the suplies needed so just bring some gloves and old clothes that would be great. We will break for lunch at 12 so everyone needs to bring a lunch or leave. There is a McDonalds and a Subway and Taco Bell right down the street. RSVP if you can help out Sat. Thanks alot! shawhollow@netscape.com

This will allow us to make reservations with Hiwassee Outfitters and pick up adequate equipment from council. Due to equipment limitations, we have the following guidelines for BSA equipment. Sign up for a canoe for your 2nd and 3rd year on the river. Sign up for a kayak if you have two years Hiwassee experience in a canoe or one year and canoeing merit badge or have attended the Kayak phase of the BSA paddling Clinic. If in doubt, see Mr. Warren. Cost will vary depending on the type of water craft from $27 to about $45. We have budgeted $17 to cover food and camping fees to which you should add the cost of your water craft .
BSA Canoe $10, BSA Kayak $15/person (this is the cost for a weekend rental). PFD's , paddles and helmets for kayakers are included. Canoes and kayaks will float the river on Saturday and Sunday. Only registered scouts and adult can use the BSA equipment due to insurance concerns.
First year scouts and non-registered family members will run the river on Saturday in a water craft of their choice obtained from a local outfitter. Family members should use their own discretion as far as floating the river with younger children. This river does have a swift current and 55 degree water temperatures. I strongly urge that all participants be able to swim well enough to self-rescue if necessary. The following costs from

(Note: in order for registered scouts and adult leaders to be covered by BSA insurance, they must take the BSA Swim Test - regardless of the type of water craft they use, to include those rented from Hiwassee Outfitters) We will camp in Gee Creek Overflow Campground on the Hiwassee River near Benton, TN. Troop 398 News - Summer Camp Special
LAST CHANCE FOR A SWIM TEST - Jon Doliana will be at SportsCom tomorrow night, Friday, June 8th at 7:00 PM to give Swim Tests. Please try to be on time, Jon has to drive to the Hiwassee River after he finishes the Swim Tests.TROOP MEETINGS
We will not have a regular Troop meeting on June 11 and June 18 due to summer camp. We will have a PLC on Monday, June 18th, at 7:00 PM at the Eagle's Nest. Our next regular troop meeting will be on June 25th.SUMMER CAMP
CHECK IN TIME: We are to be at the Camp Stahlman parking area NOT LATER THAN 2:00 PM on Sunday, June 10.Your Options: Meet at St. Mark's Eagle's Nest at 12:15 to 12:30 PM on Sunday, load gear on the trailer (we will take the trailer up to the campsite, so you won't have to carry your gear in from the parking area) and ride up in an auto or the church van, if needed. Transportation will depart not later than 1:00 PM. Your other option is to go up to Stahlman on your own and be prepared to carry your gear in from the parking area (about 1/4 mile). In any case, you must be in the Stahlman parking area by 2:00 PM unless you let Mr. Warren know that you will be arriving late.We do not have travel plans for the following scouts:
Chip Adkins, Shaun Cassidy, Beau Colson, Ellis Dodson, Michael Dodson, Alex Galloway, Brandon Hardison, Justin Jones, Jeffery Laporte, Patrick Oravetz, Michael Parker, Asher Paxton, Will Ramsey, Parker Sherer, Anthony Sigismond, Thomas Simmons, and Matthew Williams.
Please contact Assistant Scoutmaster Tom Falana at tfalana@comcast.net with your travel plans, including the following information. Will you be driving or will your scout need a ride? If you are driving, will you be traveling with the Troop or traveling alone? If you are driving and traveling with the Troop, how many scouts can you take with you? When we go to camp, you will want to have money to pay for any Merit Badge fees (COPE and Adv COPE have already been paid), craft materials and spending money. The trading post has sodas, ice cream, T-shirts and all kinds of stuff. Also Mr. Harden can take orders for worms or crickets if you need them. Bait will probably cost $2 -- $3 per container. Mrs. Daniel will be our Troop Banker. She can lock up your money for you and give it out as you need it. Please put your money in an envelope with your name and instructions for giving it out i.e. "$5 per day" or "as requested." Please enclose small bills as we will not have any change with us.Water is very important. If you don't drink enough, you will become dehydrated and get sick. Adults will monitor first and second year campers very closely to make sure they are drinking water. We will have ice water and Gator Aide in the campsite. We have a really nice shower house, please do your part to keep it clean. There is no reason that you can't take a shower each day - I really don't care how bad you smell, but a shower is the best time to check for ticks especially around your private parts! If you check daily, they will come right off - if you put it off for two days or more it may require a trip to the hospital and a group effort to remove the tick!Bring a day pack, with a canteen or quart bottle of water, scout handbook, compass (if you have one), rain gear, pencil or pen and paper or notebook, and merit badge book. (We will take the troop merit badge book library with us.) You should keep your day pack with you all day.Shorts or Swim suits & T-shirts will be worn for processing on Sunday. You may be required to retake your swim test. They will select scouts at random to spot check the pre-camp swim qualifications. If you have not had a swim test you will take one on Sunday.Pick out your tent mate (2 scouts per tent) before we leave the Eagle's Nest- we will want to know which scouts are sharing tents before we get to camp. Tent mates should be members of the same patrol. After Sunday, all visitors must sign in at the Crippled Crab when you come on to Boxwell Reservation. If you must pick up your scout before Friday afternoon, you must complete an early release form. If possible, give this to me before we leave for camp.If you are not arriving at camp at 2:00 PM on Sunday with the rest of the troop, Camp Boxwell requires that I turn in a written explanation signed by a parent and myself when we check in. This is part of their security measures. Parents, if this applies to your son, please bring this note to me Monday night.Do not expect your scout to call every single night! We will encourage them to wait until about Wed. night to call home. Scouts should not need to bring cell phones to camp. If they do, I will not be responsible for 39 scouts running up time on your son's cell phone. If you (parent) need to know something, I will call you. If you need to call, my cell phone is 473-7076. Please do not come up to get your home sick scout early with out talking to me first. Give us a chance to resolve the problem first. Please do not forget your Class A uniform and try to bring at least one pair of green (olive) shorts - no "surfer shorts" will be worn to meal formations. Wearing of Troop caps and neckerchiefs will be encouraged. Bring insect repellent. (Spray socks and legs before leaving camp to discourage ticks.) I prefer the long scout socks because the bug spray stays on them longer than on my skin. Closed toe shoes must be worn outside of the campsite. Our Troop Contact here in Murfreesboro will be Asst. SM Gore Ervin. He can relay messages or arrange for gear or clothing to be delivered to camp. His phone number is 898-2045 (W) and 867-9324 (H). E-mail: mervin@mtsu.edu . We will have someone coming up to camp each morning if you need to get something to your scout.Classes are usually complete by 4 PM on Friday. The closing campfire at 7 PM Friday night is optional. If you want to drive up and pick up your scout on Friday afternoon, that's fine. If you want to eat supper on Friday as your scout's guest, let me know, so I can let the dining hall know. During the week, meal tickets are available at the Crippled Crab for a nominal fee, if you want to eat with the troop. We will break camp Friday afternoon. I need to know if your scout needs a ride back to Murfreesboro. Please E-mail this info to me as soon as possible.Additional Troop T-shirts are available, see Mrs. Daniel on Sunday.Be sure to use a laundry marking pen or some other method to mark your Troop T-shirts, Uniform shirts and any other clothing or gear that could be mixed up with someone else's. We always have a lot of unclaimed gear and clothing at the end of camp - especially socks! No one seems to want to claim socks - probably for good reason!!!Once again, if you were not be at the troop meeting on Monday night, please reply to this E-mail so I will know that you are aware of the time we are to be at camp - This will save us going down the list to call everyone.Driving directions to Boxwell reservation: Take Hwy 840 toward Knoxville to I 40. Take I 40 west toward Nashville. Exit Interstate 40 at Hwy 109 (Exit 232) and travel north 9.2 miles. Turn left at Boxwell Reservation sign and the road runs into Boxwell Reservation. Turn left at the stop sign at the Crippled Crap and follow the signs to Camp Stahlman. From the Stahlman parking area follow the asphalt road past the left side of the Dining Hall. Look for site 16 in the wood line to the left of the road.KROGER GIFT CARDS
Please send this out to the troop. We have currently sold all of our Kroger's Gift Cards. We will be ordering more. We would like to know how many more individuals would like to get one. They are $20 and come with $20 already on them. Your scout account will be credited 2% of what is reloaded onto your card as well as the troop will get 2%. The money will be transferred into the accounts once the troop receives a check from Kroger's which is usually around once a quarter. Please email Dane Carey (dcarey@ncamfg.com) or Kathy Daniels (kcdohs@comcast.net) with your request for Kroger's Cards. We do not want to purchase too many cards and have them sitting around. I also have 2 older cards that have no name attached to them. The cards end in:

The money obtained from these cards will go into the general funds unless otherwise noted.
Remember this is free money for you and the troop.
Sincerely,
Dane Carey (via email)####################################################################
