Troop 398 News - Aug 19

COURT OF HONOR

Troop Court of Honor tomorrow, Aug 20 at the main church. Same time as the meeting. Lots of awards - it's been a busy summer!

RECHARTER TIME - HELP!!!!

We need you to confirm that you wish to reregister with Troop 398 for the next year. Please get with our Secretary Pam Hamrick before or after the Court of Honor Monday night if you have not already done so. If you are not planning to attend, please contact her by email at pam_hamrick@yahoo.com. We will not reregister you if we do not hear from you this week - please let Pam hear from you one way or another!  Annual dues which include registration fees are $50 are due Monday also. Our deadline for rechartering the troop is August 31st.

AUGUST WHITE WATER WEEKEND

This is only one week away, so we need to know if you are going and whether any members of your family are participating. Folks, this is a huge undertaking that requires a lot of food to be bought, the right number of canoes and kayaks to be loaded and transported from Camp Boxwell, rental watercraft to be reserved at Hiwassee Outfitters, and troop trailers and scouts to be transported to the river. (Let Tom Falana know if you have a vehicle capable of pulling a trailer. We need to know your final plans for this trip tomorrow night. Please plan to pay for food and the watercraft you plan to use tomorrow night also. We will write a troop check to Hiwassee Outfitters for the Saturday watercraft rentals - if you plan to rent from Hiwassee Outfitters on Sunday, you will be on your own. We need an informed consent form for each scout who will be participating.

Here are the details I put out in the past.

The troop white water weekend is August 24 - 26. All members of the troop who have passed the BSA Swim Test are eligible to float the river. (Note: in order for registered scouts and adult leaders to be covered by BSA insurance, they must take the BSA Swim Test - regardless of the type of water craft they use, to include those rented from Hiwassee Outfitters) We will camp in Gee Creek Overflow Campground on the Hiwassee River near Benton, TN. Porta Potties are available in the campground and showers are a short walk away in the main campground. We will cook as a troop so no patrol menus are required.  We will provide Breakfast, lunch and supper on Sat. And breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Plan to arrive no later than 7:30 AM EST if you plan to float on Saturday.  The float is about 6 river miles and takes 4 to 5 hours to float. We try to get off the river by 4:30 PM EST on both days. Bring sunscreen and water bottle and avoid cotton clothing. Wear lace up shoes (old athletic shoes are good), the rocks are sharp and the current will suck off crocks and flip flops.

We need input from all participants as to which water craft you wish to use. Please make a selection on the sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board or reply to this email. This will allow us to make reservations with Hiwassee Outfitters and pick up adequate equipment from council. Due to equipment limitations, we have the following guidelines for BSA equipment. Sign up for a canoe for your 2nd and 3rd year on the river. Sign up for a kayak if you have two years Hiwassee experience in a canoe or one year and canoeing merit badge or have attended the Kayak phase of the BSA paddling Clinic.  If in doubt, see Mr. Warren.  Cost  will vary depending on the type of water craft from $27 to about $45. We have budgeted $17 to cover food and camping fees to which you should add the cost of your water craft .

BSA Canoe $10, BSA Kayak $15/person (this is the cost for a weekend rental).  PFD's , paddles and helmets for kayakers are included. Canoes and kayaks will float the river on Saturday and Sunday. Only registered scouts and adult can use the BSA equipment due to insurance concerns.

First year scouts and non-registered family members will run the river on Saturday in a water craft of their choice obtained from a local outfitter. Family members should use their own discretion as far as floating the river with younger children. This river does have a swift current and 55 degree water temperatures. I strongly urge that all participants be able to swim well enough to self-rescue if necessary. The following costs from Hiwassee outfitters are for one day only: Sit-on Top Kayak $ 27.50/person, 1 person Funyak (Inflatable Kayak) $25/person, 2 person Funyak $20/person, 4,5, or 6 person raft $15/person or $60 per raft minimum. PFD's (life jackets), paddle and a shuttle to the put-in are included. More info on watercraft is available at http://www.hiwasseeoutfitters.com/

Directions to Gee Creek Campground.  Take I 24 East to Chattanooga. Go north on I 75 toward Cleveland & Knoxville. Get off I 75 at exit # 20 (Hwy 64 bypass). Turn right at the top of the ramp on Hwy 64 bypass. Turn right onto Hwy 64 East to Ocoee. Take Hwy 411 North toward Benton & Etowah. Go through Benton (well known in the past for its speed traps!) and cross the Hiwassee River. Approximately 1/4 to ½ mile after crossing the river go past a restaurant and turn right at the Gee Creek sign. Follow this road until you pass the rangers office and then watch for the entrance to Gee Creek Campground on your right. Turn right into the campground then take your first right turn then turn right again into a large field (Overflow/Group camping area). Look for a Troop 398 trailer and a bunch of canoes. If you miss us on Sat, go back out to Hwy 411 and turn left. Go back across the Hiwassee River and turn left on Hwy 30 and go to Reliance, Tn (approx. 5 miles). Rafters and Funyakers will be getting their equipment from Hiwassee Outfitters.

EAGLE SERVICE PROJECT
If you need a few more service hours for your next rank, here's a good opportunity.
Drew Fry asked that I forward this message to the troop. This weekend I will be working on my eagle project. I will start at 8 in the morning on Saturday, August 11.  Lunch will be provided. Things to bring: work gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows (if you have one), and lots of water.
Directions: If you're going Broad Street toward Smyrna, take the Nissan Drive exit toward Nissan Plant. Follow that road around until you get to Jefferson Pike. Turn right onto Jefferson Pike. Then make a left onto Gils Street. Take a right onto Swan Drive. Swan Drive becomes Espey Drive< /st1:Street>. Take a right onto Wise Drive, which ends at Colemon Elementary School, 100 Wise Drive. Follow the road (bus route) on the far right of the school, it circles around to the back of the school. When you see the chain link fence located in the back between the two buildings, then you should see our project in the center.
