Troop 398 - Service Projects

SERVICE OPPORTUNITY FOR THE NOV. 4TH ELECTION
I was very surprised that only 4 scouts signed up to help out during the Nov 4th election - this would be really interesting and you'll learn a lot about the election process. The deadline to submit names was last Friday, but if you let me know right away, I may be able to get some more on the list. Remember, there is no school on Election Day.

Here is the information I put out originally:  There is an opportunity for Scouts to be in involved in the November 4 Presidential Election. Many predict that this election could be the most important in our brief history of the United States of America, so it is truly an exciting time for us to get involved.  The Rutherford County Election Commission would like to invite Trail of Tears District Boy Scouts to participate in the Election by being present to greet and assist voters at the polls (more details below and attached). We believe this is an excellent opportunity for the scouts and the election commission to work hand in hand for the good of the entire community.

Two scouts will be assigned at each polling location There will be two shifts, one from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and one from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Scout Class A uniform will be worn while serving. Scouts will be responsible for greeting each voter and directing them to the area of the sample ballot, the information table or the registrar's table. They will give out "I voted" stickers after the voter votes. Scouts will be working with the Election Officials at the polling place.

FOOD FOR FAMILIES
Kroger would like some scouts to greet customers and ask for donations for Food for Families this Saturday, Oct 25 at the Lebanon road store.  I need to know at the Troop meeting if you can participate. Class A uniform. I'll post a sign-up sheet at the troop meeting.

Michael Daniel's Eagle Scout Project

Michael needs volunteers to work on his Eagle Scout project this Saturday beginning at 8:30 am. at Fortress Rosecrans.  He needs lots of help, and he'll have food.   We will be gathering seeds from native plants to be replanted in the spring. Directions follow, and no extra equipment is required, except maybe some dry socks & shoes for later, and leather work gloves.  Thanks very much.

Fortress Rosecrans is within Old Fort Park. From Old Fort Parkway (Highway 96) turn into the entrance of Old Fort Park which is directly opposite the intersection of Highway 99 and Highway 96 in Murfreesboro. Pass the Kids Castle play ground on your right. Continue straight on Golf Lane through the intersection of Overall Street and Golf Lane towards the Murfreesboro city golf course. The parking area for Fortress Rosecrans will be on your right. You will see the large National Park Service sign at the entrance.

From there we will go to the McFadden Farm site which is north of Broad Street. We will park at the Thompson Lane Trailhead for the Murfreesboro Greenway. From Fortress Rosecrans we will drive out of Old Fort Park and take a right on Old Fort Parkway (Highway 96). We will take a right at Thompson Lane, cross Broad Street, and turn right into the Thompson Lane Trailhead parking lot just before we reach the bridge that crosses the Stones River. You will see wooden fencing and a sign leading you to the parking area.

DANE CAREY'S CONSERVATION PROJECT
I have a conservation project at Stones River Battlefield set for Saturday, Nov. 15th. We will be planting around 57 trees along a fence row to help keep views of modern day building from being seen from inside the park. I will need a group around noon to help load the trees (location TBA). I'll need another larger group to meet on Van Cleve Ln off Murfreesboro Rd (directions below). We will take the trees off the trailer (hopefully the trailer will travel along the pre-dug holes) and place them in the holes. We will then cover them up with dirt from the holes. Items we will need are Gloves, Shovels, and Racks, so you can bring them, please put your name on them so they get back with their owners.  I'm hoping to have this done in 2 – 2 1/2 hours. We will have drinks out there and hope to get some food donated. Is there any way I can get a head count of those that might be able to come and help? So I can see if I need to ask some other troops to come and help. This is one of my tickets for Wood Badge.

Directions:
Loading the trailer: Location TBA

Unloading and planting: Murfreesboro Rd (just past Thompson Lane turn Right on Van Cleve Lane).

Van Cleve Ln is between Internal Paper and Murfreesboro Outdoors. Look for the Railroad crossing signs over the road and the tracks crossing Murfreesboro Rd. Van Cleve is right where the tracks cross. The site is just past the entrance into the park on the right

Thank you in advance for all that can come out to help me and support this project.
