Troop News - June 15

REMINDER: THERE WILL BE NO REGULAR TROOP MEETING ON MONDAY, JUNE 16th - OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE JUNE 23rd

PATROL LEADERS COUNCILThe PLC will meet at 7:00 PM on Monday, June 16th at the Eagle's Nest. Patrol leaders make sure someone is there to represent your patrol.

SUMMER CAMP Summer Camp 2008 was great - no major problems - somewhat hotter than last year. We finally got a little rain on Friday afternoon. Our first year campers, Luke Clement, Casey Dodson, Nicholas Giles, Kellum Johnson, Robert Perkins, Samuel Phillips and Sean Walker, did great! Many thanks to the adults who spent the week with me, Kathy Daniel, Dennis Harden, Dorsey Horne, Jim Klaus, and Jeff White. A big thanks to Jeff for working with our new scouts all week. Let us not forget all the work that went into getting ready for camp - many thanks to Gore Ervin (Scheduling), Kathy Daniel (Physicals) , Tom Falana (Transportation) and Jon Doliana (Swim Tests). We will have a copy of all merit badge paperwork for you by our next troop meeting. Despite the super human efforts of our "Camp Mom", Kathy Daniel, we still fell a few points shy of the coveted "Golden Broom Award" again this year in the campsite inspection. A group picture from camp is attached.

ANTHONY SIGISMONDMost of you know that Anthony broke his leg sliding into home plate a couple of days prior to summer camp and was still in the hospital when we left on Sunday. This update from his Mom was waiting for me when I returned from camp. Hi, all.
Anthony had a surgery on Monday and everything went well. He was released from the hospital yesterday afternoon and now he is resting at home.
He is in a lot of pain still, but he is doing fine. I got a wheelchair and crutches for him, but right now he is not supposed to be putting any weight on his right leg.
Thank you for your concerns, kind words, visits, emails, phone calls and gifts. We really appreciate it.
Also, thank you for taking care of his trip cancellations.

Hope he will heal quickly so he can join everyone again!

Nori Anthony won't be out and about much for a while, so stay in touch with him!

IOWA TORNADO
By now, I know you have all heard about the devastating tornados that tragically took the lives of the four Boy Scouts last week in Iowa . What you may not have had a chance to see is the interview with two of the young men that survived that ran this morning on NBC. I have included the link below.

Lots to make us think about and for which to be thankful.

June 12: TODAY’s Ann Curry talks to Boy Scouts Taylor Willoughby and Ethan Hession -- and their parents -- about the deadly tornado that hit their camp in Iowa .

This note is from our council office:If you or anyone else would like, you can send donations to us and we will forward once we have collected a substantial amount. If you send to us, please put to the attention of Hugh Travis and mark on your check that it is for the Mid-America Council. You are also welcome to send directly to the Mid-America Council. If you prefer that, let me know and I will send you their mailing address.
Thank you so much for your concern and wanting to help those in need. I cannot imagine what grief and heartache all those affected are going through. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Please let me know if I can be of further help.

The Middle Tennessee Council and Scouting appreciates the outpouring of support to those affected by the events of June 11.

The Middle Tennessee Council has offered the Mid-America Council in Omaha , Nebraska the opportunity of having the troops signed up for summer camp to attend Boxwell and we are waiving the camp fees.

Additionally, those that attend camp will receive assistance in intermediate lodging as they travel to Boxwell provided by the Middle Tennessee Council.

We will keep a list and contact person and forward that to the Mid-America Council indicating a desire to assist.

Donations to offset funeral expenses, camp rebuilding and equipment replacement will be forwarded to the Mid America Council President.

Troop 398 News - June 3

TROOP MEETINGS
There will be not be a troop meeting on June 9th or June 16th due to Summer Camp.

PATROL LEADERS' COUNCIL MEETING
The PLC will meet on Monday, June 16th at 7:00 PM at the Eagle's Nest. Please make sure your patrol is represented.

EAGLE SERVICE PROJECT
Andrew White needs volunteers to work on his project this Saturday morning at Cason Lane Academy.

SUMMER CAMP
Our check in time for Summer Camp will be 2:10 PM on Sunday, June 8th, at the Camp Stahlman parking area. We will once again be at campsite 16. Parents can drive their Scouts up on their own if they wish, as long as you arrive on time or you can meet us at the Eagle's Nest and convoy up. It would be a good idea to load personal gear in the troop trailer at the Eagle's Nest since the trailer will be dropped at our campsite and will save you hauling gear in from the parking lot. The trailer will be available for loading at 11:00 AM on Sunday. (The door to the dual axle trailer will be unlocked) Otherwise, plan to meet at the Eagle's Nest at 12:30 PM to allow time to load personal gear in the trailer. We will depart from the Eagles Nest not later than 1:00 PM. We will have a 15 passenger van available, but with 33 scouts going to camp, we will also need some parents to help haul some scouts also. If you did not check in with Tom Falana at the meeting last night, please reply to this email if you would be available to drive and let me know how many scouts you can carry.

Please email me if you will be arriving after the check in time on Sunday. Also please email me if you plan to pick up your scout during the week for an off-reservation event or if you plan to leave camp prior to Friday afternoon.

We will have six adults in camp all week: Mike Warren, Kathy Daniel, Dorsey Horne, Dennis Harden, Jim Klaus and Jeff White.

Wear Class B uniform to check in (Scout T-Shirt, shorts and closed toed shoes.) Bring your Class A uniform to camp as it will be worn each night at the supper meal. You may wear sandals or Crocks in camp and to the shower. Check your merit badge requirements for any special clothing or equipment you need. (Such as long sleeve shirts and pants for swimming and COPE) No brightly colored shorts to be worn with the class A shirt - dark green shorts/pants preferred. Bring a canteen and rain gear. If you ordered a mosquito net, I will have it on Sunday - I will have a limited number of extra nets also. I can email a diagram for a simple frame on request. Please, no electronic games, fixed blade knives or fireworks. Personal bikes for Cycling Merit badge only. Music players and cell phones will be secured with your gear in camp during the day. Bring your scout handbook, notebook and pen or pencil. Bring a lock to secure your gear - it's a good idea to give Mr Horne an extra key or your combination in case one gets lost.

We will post the schedules for scouts once we get to camp. Scouts are required to attend their assigned classes each day unless they get permission from one of the adult leaders in camp.

Some merit badges require additional fees (boating, shooting, handicraft) -  information on this and other camp matters can be found by going to the Middle Tennessee Council website at http://www.mtcbsa.org/Camp/boyscoutcamp.htm

Dorsey Horne will once again be our banker - He will secure any cash and disburse it to the scouts according to your desires. Just put the cash in an envelope with your scout's name and any instructions and give it to Dorsey on Sunday.

Visitors are welcome, check in at the Crippled Crab when you enter and leave the reservation. If you want to eat a meal with us, you can pay for it at the Crippled Crab.

Plan to pick up your scout on Friday afternoon after 4:30 PM.  Let me know if your scout will need a ride back to the Eagle's Nest on Friday.  If you want to stay for supper please let me know so I can pass on a count to the dining hall. Tickets must be purchased at the Cripple Crab - $6.00/person. As it stands now, we will break camp on Friday afternoon. There will be a closing campfire about 7:30 PM on Friday if you wish to attend.

No public phones are available at camp - The Camp emergency number is (615) 444-7072 or call the Council at (615) 383-9724.

Scouts like mail - start sending it early!
