Summer Camp
It was another great camp in spite the hot temperatures. We had 29 scouts plus 5 "orphans" from other troops. We have advancement sheets for everyone who was at camp – Mr. Ervin is in the process of making copies and will hand them out at a troop meeting. A big thank you to Richard and Kate McAdams for putting together a fried chicken feast complete with ice cream that gave us a welcome break from dining hall food on Thursday night! Many thanks to the adult leaders who stayed at camp with me during the week: Brett Barrett, Dorsey Horne, Thom Schnell, Dane Carey and Dennis Harden.
Troop Meetings
Yes, we will continue to meet even though we have 23 scouts and 12 adults hitting the road for a 12 day trek at Philmont Scout Ranch on July 2nd. We will not have our July 4th cookout at St. Mark's this year. We will concentrate on Second and First Class advancement during the next three meetings while many of our older scouts are on the trip. We plan to have the older scouts who are not making the trip to work with the younger scouts on advancement. We need as many as possible to attend these meetings to make it productive.
July Camp Out
We are going to check out a new camping spot July 9 – 11. We will camp in Group Campsite #2 at Montgomery Bell State Park. They have a compass hike laid out nearby. We will concentrate on Second and First Class cooking requirements and we'll bring the canoes along and possibly do some fishing and canoeing on nearby Lake Woodhaven.
August Camp Out
Mark August 20 – 22 on your calendars for our whitewater family campout at Gee Creek Campground on the Hiwassee River near Benton , TN. We'll rent inflatable kayaks and rafts from Hiwassee Outfitters for first year scouts and non registered family members. Registered scouts and adults who have floated before will use BSA canoes and kayaks.
Youth Whitewater Training
This is a great opportunity for a weekend of fun and an opportunity to greatly improve your paddling skills. See Mr. Warren if you want to enroll – this course fills up fast!
September Camp Out
We've designated September 17 -19 for our camp out. We're checking the availability of Camp Beany Elam and the rappelling tower at Boxwell Reservation.
Adult Rappelling Certification
ASM Glen Lanier is planning to attend this training on September 10-12, 2010 – we need to get a few more certified so we can check out rappelling equipment. We need to get you enrolled as early as possible. If you are interested, see Mike Warren. Here are the details: Rappelling and rock climbing are the most rapidly growing outdoor sports. Young people are now engaging in them with various degrees of knowledge and ability. We can teach you the basic skills of ropes and safety and prepare you for an outdoor adventure with your Scouts. Rappelling/rock climbing course certification is valid for two years. Completion of one session (two and a half days) will certify or re-certify an individual for two years.
