SCOUT SUNDAY THIS WEEK AT ST. MARK’S
All members of the Troop 398 family are invited as we celebrate Scout Sunday this Sunday Feb 12th at St. Marks. We plan to sit together as a group at both the 8:30 and 11:00 am services. I will need Scouts to serve as greeters and ushers before and during the service. We have been asked to present the colors during both services. All Boy Scouts and their parents are encouraged to attend one or both services as an expression of our appreciation for the support we receive from the staff and members of St. Marks. If you have a Cub Scout brother or a Girl Scout sister, be sure to bring them along.

I need at least 15 scouts at each service to handle our part of the program. Scouts need to show up about 30 minutes prior to each service so we can get organized. Please email me before Sunday and let me know how many from your family will be attending and which service so I will know how many seats to allocate in the Worship Center.

Wear your Class A uniform. This will count as service hours.

SCOUTING FOR FOOD THIS SATURDAY
Start collecting non-perishable items of food and bring it all in to the Eagle’s Nest this Sat., Feb 11th from 10 to 11 pm. We will put it all in my truck for deliver it to the collection point. Those who participate will receive service hour credit and a patch.

REGULAR TROOP MEETING MONDAY NIGHT
A patrol cooking contest is planned – all members of the winning patrol who are present will receive a prize.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY FUND RAISER
Great job to all who sold tickets and worked during the week before and the weekend! It looks like we beat last years sales by over $1,000 – by last Monday we had collected over $11,500. We were still getting our numbers together, but we are hoping for a profit of $5,000 to $6,000. If anyone is interested, we have some left over – a few Turkey breasts , pork butts, maybe 4 lbs of pork and 9 slabs of ribs. If no one wants it, we’ll freeze it for later use.

LASER TAG – FEB 17
Laser tag has been scheduled for Feb 17th. We will meet at the Eagle’s Nest at 10 PM on Friday night and go to Laser Quest in Nashville. The cost is $35/person if we have a minimum of 30 people and this includes pizzas. Guests are welcome. We split into two groups and alternate playing 15 minute games from midnight till 6:00 AM. Scouts will be ready to be picked up at 7:00 AM at the Eagle’s Nest. Email me if you want to attend, but cannot make it to the meeting Monday night.

EAGLE COURT OF HONOR – FEB. 18
Matt Fowler will receive his Eagle Award at a special Court of Honor at 2:00 PM on Feb. 18th in the Worship Center at St. Mark’s. Reception will follow. Everyone is invited to share in Matt’s achievement.

GOD AND COUNTRY
We’ve got a good group who have signed up for the God and Country program. The sign-up sheet will come down after this Monday’s meeting so be sure to sign up if you have not done so. You will be notified of the time and location of the first meeting.

TROOP VENTURE PROGRAM
Troop 398 is implementing a “Venture Program” to supplement our other troop activities. The venture program purpose is to offer alternative activities for the older scouts. The program is designed to identify medium to high adventure activities that our troop does not typically do. Program participation is limited to scouts who are at least 13 yrs old and a First Class Scout and is also focused on those scouts that have already earned the Eagle Rank and still have time remaining before their 18th birthday. The program is also appropriate for those young Eagle scouts who have recently reached the age of 18 but want to stay involved in troop activities and are registered leaders. This program does not replace regular troop and patrol activities. Scouts will remain involved with their respective patrols and must maintain a level of troop participation in order to attend the venturing program activities. The venturing program is only a supplement to our troop activities to increase the regular involvement of the older scouts by introducing more age appropriate and challenging activities. The program will be a lot of fun and challenging. The program will seek to have a venturing outing every quarter. The weeks leading up to the activity will be used to train and learn the skills necessary to safely complete the venturing activity. The additional focus for the program is to emphasize leadership skills and scouting principles. Scout leadership will be rotated each quarter to allow maximum participation and inclusion of scouts in leadership positions. We hope that the program results in a more confident and competent young leaders.
The first activity will be focused on wilderness survival. The first meeting will occur on February 13. There will also be an opportunity to earn the Wilderness Survival merit badge for those what wish to earn it, but there will be much more to the activity than just merit badge requirements. This activity will culminate with a 2 – 3 day survival outing in late March/early April guaranteed to test the mental and physical endurance of the scouts. All activities will have the appropriate number of training adult leadership and safety will always take priority.
The scouts will determine the activities going forward, but some activities discussed have been rappelling, bicycle hike in Cades Cove, extreme hiking and backpacking, leadership confidence course on a military base, an Appalachian Trail experience. We are only limited by our imagination.

ORDER OF THE ARROW ELECTION
O/A elections will be held Feb. 20th. We need a good turn-out - at least half of the troop must be present to conduct the election.

Eligibility Criteria: Adults under 21 and all scouts must have achieved the First Class rank or higher. All
members must have experienced at least 15 nights of Boy Scout camping within the past two calendar years, including one, but no more than one, long term camp of 5 or 6 nights. The remaining 9 or 10 nights must consist of overnight, weekend or other short term camping. Cabin camping was counted. Backpacking trips, regardless of length are counted as short term camping. ADULT SAILING TRAINING
Learn the skills needed to conduct a weekend sailing activity at Boxwell's new and improved Pfeffer Boat Harbor using the new American 14.6 and Aqua Finn Sailboats. There will be 3 hours of classroom time and 8.5 hours of hands on Sailboat training and sailing.

Adult Sailing Training Dates for 2012
March 16 - 17, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. thru Friday and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Cost: School Fee is $45.00 per person. Includes meals Saturday, boat rental use, Cubworld cabin camping and materials.

the Boy Scouts of America

The Boys Scouts of America was incorporated FEBRUARY 8, 1910.

Sir Robert Baden-Powell began the movement in England two years prior.

A hero of the South African Boer Wars, Sir Baden-Powell's troops were besieged 200 days by an overwhelming army, but thanks to his resourcefulness, his men were saved.

The Boy Scouts are now the largest voluntary youth movement in the world, with membership over 25 million.

In the pamphlet "Scouting & Christianity," 1917, Baden-Powell wrote:

"Scouting is nothing less than applied Christianity."

President Calvin Coolidge wrote to the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Washington, DC, May 1, 1926:

"The boy on becoming a scout binds himself on his honor to do his best...'To do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the scout law...To help other people at all times...To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight'...

Members must promise to be trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent...

It would be a perfect world if everyone exemplified these virtues in daily life...

Those who attempt to live in opposition to these standards...become slaves of their own evil doing, realizing the Scriptural assertion that they who sin are the servants of sin and that the wages of sin is death."

President Dwight Eisenhower stated on the 50th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, June 1, 1960:

"That is the great thing about Scouting...We read in our Bibles the Parable of the Good Samaritan...They individually and collectively begin to think of their nation in part as a 'good Samaritan,' doing the decent thing in this world...

Scouting is indeed doing something...vital to our vigor as a nation based upon a religious concept."

President George H.W. Bush stated at James Madison High School, Vienna, Virginia, March 28, 1989:

"People wonder and talk about...the Thousand Points of Light?...Helping some kid that may be tempted to use narcotics...A church group doing something...It's the Red Cross...It is the Boy Scouts...It is Christian Athletes...Voluntarism."

On July 25, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge addressed a gathering of Boy Scouts in New York headed to Copenhagen:

"The three fundamentals of scouthood are reverence for nature...reverence for law...and reverence for God.

President Coolidge concluded:

Super Bowl Sunday Fund Raiser
Good job! Ticket sales are close to $9,000 which is about $1,000 more than we had at this time last year! If we have the same levels of non-ticket sales on Sunday, we are looking at another record year.

Now all we have to do is cook and package 120 pork butts, 50 turkey breasts, and 214 slabs of ribs!
Mike Holtman and I will begin cooking at 9 PM Thursday night. Dane Carey and Dennis Harden will join us Friday. We will continue to cook as long as necessary on Sat. We need plenty of help starting Sat at 9:00 AM until we get everything packaged. Sunday starting at 7:00 AM, we need help moving the product into the church in order to get set up before the 8:30AM service. We need plenty of help in Class A uniform starting at 9:00 AM to hand out the orders to our customers. We usually have everything handed out by 1:30 PM and we need a few folks to stick around and help us clean up.

It’s a heck of a lot of work, but if everyone pitches in, it’ll all get done! See you this weekend.

Canada (Ely) Canoe Trek Meeting - Mon. Feb 6
If you are going on this trip this summer, please plan to attend a meeting at 6:00 PM this Monday, Feb. 6 at the Eagle’s Nest. We will discuss documents needed to travel in Canada, required training, and preparations for the trip.

Troop Planning Meeting – Mon. Feb. 6
Planning meeting only troop leaders are required to attend. PLC at 7:00 PM. Patrol Leaders, make sure your patrol is represented.

Troop Meeting

Poinsettia Sales - Orders will be available for pick up this Monday, Nov. 28. The troop had to pay for the poinsettias when we ordered them, so collect when you deliver the poinsettias and pay Mr. Holtman as soon as possible. Checks can be made out to "Troop 398 BSA (poinsettias)"

SM Conference and Board of Review - This Monday will be your last chance to have a SM Conference or Board of Review prior to the Troop Court of Honor planned for next Monday, Dec. 5th . I will at the Eagle’s nest by 6:15 PM in case anyone wants to come in early for a SM Conference. Hopefully we’ll have enough Committee Members available to run two BR’s at the same time. Remember you handbook and wear your class A Uniform

December Camp Out

I was so busy stuffing my face with turkey, this one slipped up on me! It will be at Short Mountain next weekend, December 2-4. We will be sleeping in a heated cabin with beds and mattresses. Bring sleeping bag, warm clothes, work gloves and your Class A uniform. Saturday morning we will work on service projects clearing brush, trees and moving some rocks (Adults bring a chain saw, prunners and possibly a pry bar if you have either). We will go hiking Sat afternoon. We will cook as a troop for all meals. Parents and other family members are invited to come up and join us for supper Sat evening. Dress warmly, the only heat in the dining hall is a large fireplace. Come up early enough to enjoy the view. We traditionally prepare a prime rib feast topped off by dutch oven cobblers. We plan to eat supper at 5:30 PM. The cost is estimated at $20 for all meals for the weekend or $12 for Sat. Supper only. After supper on Saturday evening we will have a Christmas devotional and voluntary gift exchange. Scouts who want to participate, should bring a small, appropriate, gift (approx. $5-$10). Those who bring a gift will participate in a mystery gift exchange. We usually play board games on Friday and Saturday nights so bring your favorite game. A sign-up sheet is posted, but please email me by Monday night with your guests’ names if you do not plan to be at the troop meeting tomorrow. We will have to order the food on Tuesday. We usually have a large crowd so we need to be able to buy the right amount of food.

Directions to Short Mountain Bible Camp, 650 Bible Camp Road, Woodbury, TN 37190 (Travel time is about 45 minutes:
From St. Mark’s UMC, turn right onto N. Rutherford, proceed through 3 traffic lights and at the 4th light turn left onto Mercury Blvd. (US- 70/John Bragg HWY). Go to/through Woodbury toward McMinnville (approximately 30 miles). Turn left at Jct. Hwy 281 just past a school zone. Hwy 281 will dead-end at SR-146, turn left onto 146 N proceed 4.9 miles. Turn left at the Short Mountain Fire Tower/ Short Mountain Bible Camp signs. Proceed to camp by continuing up the mountain and turning right onto Bible Camp Road at the Camp sign.
Troop Court of Honor
The next troop Court of Honor will be Mon., Dec 5th. Your last opportunity for a Board of Review will be Nov 28th. All completed Merit Badge paperwork should also be turned in by Nov 28th.

Eagle Court of Honor
Chip Adkins will receive his Eagle Award at 2:30 PM this Sunday, Nov. 20th at St. Mark’s. All troop members are invited. Wear class A uniform and come celebrate Chip’s achievement.

Backpacking Trip
All troop equipment, backpacks, tents, stoves should be turned back in by next Monday.

Popcorn Sales
If you have not picked up your popcorn orders call Mrs. Hopkins 410-8060 as soon as possible – our resident mice are a hungry bunch!

Poinsettia Sales
Here’s another great opportunity to fatten your Scout Account – as with the popcorn sales, 100% of the profit goes to the individual scouts. Orders and money should be turned in on Nov. 21st. Pick up the plants on Nov. 28th.

Troop Court of Honor
The next troop Court of Honor will be Mon., Dec 5th. Your last opportunity for a Board of Review will be Nov 28th. All completed Merit Badge paperwork should also be turned in by Nov 28th.

December Camp Out

Cycling Merit Badge
Mr. Warren, please email the following message to Troop 398:

This Saturday, November 5, is forecasted to be a beautiful, sunny day. For those scouts who would like to work on their bicycling merit badge by completing their 50-mile ride, plan to meet in the parking lot at Old Fort Park at 7:30 a.m. for a ride to and from Eagleville on a portion of the greenway and Hwy. 99. Make sure your bike is in good condition, and wear bike shorts and helmet. Bring water and snacks. Adults are welcome and encouraged to join us for part or all of this trip this Saturday!

Once again, Rev. Mullins, a member of St. Mark’s has offered to coordinate a God in Church/ God in Life program for any scouts who are interested. Scouts have the option of working within their own church if they wish. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board. Rev. Mullins will have the initial meeting in January or March.

Bell Buckle Fund Raiser
We are trying to develop this into a fund raiser that will provide significant $’s to help off reduce the costs of our High Adventure Trips each summer. Scouts who are going canoeing in Canada next summer will be the beneficiaries this year. Down the road, we are looking at Philmont backpacking in 2013 and Key West sailing in 2014 – everyone planning to go on these trips will benefit in future years.This is a big undertaking that has the potential to net some really big bucks. Here is the list of those who have signed up. Dennis Harden and Mike Warren will be there both days. Class A is the uniform for all Scouts - Adults- golf shirts or class A or what ever.

Mr. Harden suggests that those parking cars bring and extra pair of shoes and socks since feet tend to get wet from the dew when parking cars.

Go to our parking location to park your own car to avoid a fee.

Troop Meeting - Oct. 17th

Monday Sept. 19th will be a planning meeting. PLC at 7:00 PM. For those of you who are new to the troop, we normally have one Monday night meeting per month that is dedicated to planning for future meetings and events. Only members of the Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC) are expected to attend. That normally includes the Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant SPL’s, Patrol Leaders,Troop Guide, Scribe, and Quartermaster.

A Patrol Leader who cannot attend the PLC is expected to select a patrol member to attend in his place to represent the patrol. The Senior Patrol Leader conducts the PLC. The Scoutmaster serves as an Advisor to the group.

Mr. Holtman, Troop Treasurer is available to accept registration forms or handle financial matters if you want to drop by.

Our next regular Troop meeting will be held on Oct. 26.

November Camp Out
We will be going backpacking Nov. 11-13. Unsure of the destination – pass on your ideas to your patrol leader. We will make a decision next Monday night at the PLC.

Scout Day at MTSU – Saturfday Nov. 19th

Dear Scout leaders,

ATTN: There is one change that I would like to make from the previous invite to the MTSU Scout Day. In addition to the football game, you will now also be able to attend the men’s basketball game following the football game for FREE using your football ticket stub. That’s right…2 games for the price of 1. The men’s basketball game (vs. UNC-Greensboro as part of the EA Sports Maui Invitation) is scheduled to tip off at 5:00pm, which will be around the same time the football game is concluding. The football game will kick-off around 2-2:30pm.

I would like to invite you to MTSU’s Annual Scout Day, taking place on Saturday, November 19th. With the tremendous success of last year’s event, we have decided to once again host the Scout Day along with our Salute to Armed Services and Veterans Day. Join us for an afternoon full of fun, family and football including:

· 2011 limited edition Scout patch

· Seats in the Family Fun Zone including free face painting, balloon artist, and children’s inflatable’s

· Your Troop/Pack name on the Blue Tube

· Take the field as part of the High-Five Tunnel

· A salute to thousands of military personal during a special half-time ceremony

· Explore military vehicles prior to kick-off around Floyd Stadium and much more!

(A Scout Day flyer with an outline of information for the event will be posted on the Troop bulletin board along with a sign-up sheet.) Additionally, all groups that decide to attend and purchase tickets will be emailed a detailed information sheet three weeks prior to the event including parking suggestions and information packet pick-up. Also, in a change from last year’s event, the Scout patches will be available at the game this year.

In 2009, MTSU’s Scout Day had nearly 500 Scouts in attendance. In 2010, that number soared to an incredible 1,950 Scouts from Middle-Tennessee. We look forward to seeing what Scout Day 2011 has in store and continuing to make the day a special memory for all of you that join us!

Service Opportunity – Preparing For Titans Breast Cancer Awareness Game

This opportunity will be limited to the first 225 Boy Scouts and leaders who sign up so we need to get back to him right away if we want to participate. We would like to invite your troop as one of a select few to participate in a great event on October 22. This is the day before the next Titan’s home game. This is a chance of a lifetime for our Boy Scouts and incredible opportunity.

We are truly excited about the opportunity to participate in the Titan’s Breast Cancer Awareness game.

Here are the basics:

We are going to help the Titans turn LP Field PINK in a flash card event
This is the first time this will be done at an NFL game for Breast Cancer
We will be shooting a time lapse video for you tube that will hopefully go viral through the Titans and the NFL
We need 250 people for 4hours to tape flash cards to 65,000 seats
This event is limited to Boy Scouts – there will be no Cub Scouts due to the nature of the task and the time demands
25 Zone Captains will lead Scouts in their assigned area
8:30 ~ Zone Captains arrive at LP Field for training
9:30 ~ 225 scouts (this would be your troop) arrive to be briefed and take group photo
10 a.m. – 2 p.m. ~ turning LP Field pink (depending on weather)
Lunch will be provided
We will send every participant a nice event photo
We are requiring a full field uniform (commonly referred to as a Class A) – absolutely no jeans / correct Scout uniform pants
If adults are participating and they own a full uniform, we request they wear it

Bell Buckle Craft Fair
We will need a lot of help for this fund raiser on October 15 & 16. We will be manning a cooking booth as well as parking cars for Webb School. Any money we make will go toward next summer’s high adventure canoeing trip to Canada. All crew members are expected to participate. A sign up sheet is posted.

October Campout Latimer High Adventure Base (This Weekend)
Thanks to Fall Break, we will be departing at several different times. It’s a 2 – 3 hour drive so car-pooling would be a good idea. Adults who want to car pool should make their own arrangements. Breakfast will be at 7:00 AM on Sat. Opening ceremony will be at 9:00 am. Bring a change of clothes – there’s a good chance you’ll get wet during the canoe races. Bring a canteen. Bring your handbook if you plan to pass anything off this weekend. Chapel will be at 8:30 on Sun. We plan to return to Murfreesboro by 1:30 PM on Sunday. Be advised, cell phone reception is very poor or non-existent at the camp.
I need to hear from Kyle Ceder and Mitchell Jacobs and anyone else going on the camp out who is not mentioned below – let me know when you want to go up so I can link you up with a driver.

Directions to Latimer High Adventure Reservation
From St. Mark’s UMC:
1. Start out going left (south) on N Rutherford Blvd for 2.2 Miles
2. Turn left onto Mercury Blvd / US-70S E / TN-1 E. Continue to follow US-70S E / TN-1 E. toward McMinnville for 35.6 miles.
3. Merge onto US-70S E / TN-1 E toward Sparta for 6.4 miles.
4. Turn slight right onto TN-30 E / Spencer Rd. Continue to follow TN-30 E. for 15.7 miles.
5. In Spencer, Turn left onto TN-30 / Old McMinnville Hwy / College St. Continue to follow TN-30 E. for 8.7 miles.
6. Turn left at waste disposal site (there is a brown and white Latimer High Adventure Reservation sign with left arrow on your right) onto TN-285 E. /( Mooneyham Rd.).
7. Continue on TN-285 E. for 6.0 miles to Midway Church of Christ (white church building on your left).
8. Turn left/straight (there is another sign here) onto Lewis Wilson Road for 2.3 miles (pavement ends in .3 miles – turns to gravel).
9. Follow gravel road bearing left at intersections to the entrance of Latimer High Adventure Reservation.
Look for Troop 398 trailer.

Food
Mr. Harden will buy food for all adults. Jared Dix, Reed Spivey and Webelos guests will eat with the adults. Mr. Harden will have hot dogs, buns and fixings for a late snack when we get set up.
Everyone should bring a cup, fork and spoon. Patrols have been set up for cooking. Patrol Leaders are responsible for setting up patrol duty rosters. The Scout designated as Food Buyer will buy enough food for his patrol. Save your receipts and turn them in to Mr. Holtman. He will reimburse you and then he will charge the patrol members’ scout accounts for an equal share of the food.

Eagle Service Project – Oct. 1
Thomas Dugan will need volunteers on Oct 1st at 9 AM at Mitchell Nielson Primary School Jones Blvd. You will be working on an outdoor classroom. If you have them, bring rakes, shovels and hand saws. Donuts, coffee and water will be furnished. Hope to finish by noon – if not, lunch will be provided.

Fly Fishing Merit Badge Counselor Needed

October Camp Out
We will attend District Camporee October 7-9 at Latimer High Adventure Base. There will be canoe races, rappelling and other events. Patrols will plan their own menus and cook as a patrol. We will finalize cooking patrols at the next meeting. We will leave at 5:30 PM Friday evening, but most likely we will have adults driving up Sat. morning if you need a ride. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board. Email me if you cannot make it to the meeting to sign up.

Adult Leader Meeting
Les Gray has a Wood Badge Ticket item which involves looking at ways we can better utilize our adult leaders. He will be leading a leaders’ meeting Monday Sept. 19th at 7:00 PM to identify areas that need adult involvement. For example, we want to assign an adult advisor for each of the scout leadership positions to help the scouts develop responsibility in those areas. We also need one or possibly two adults to assist and advise the troop guide and sign off on new scout advancement. Asst. Scoutmasters and Committee members are encouraged to attend.

2012 Canadian Canoe Trek at Ely, MN
Our second payment of $125/person is due on September 19, 2011. The third payment of $200/person will be due on Feb 20, 2012.All payments made to the High Adventure Base are non-refundable, but they can be transferred to someone on our waiting list. Final payment of travel expenses will be due on June 18, 2012. Plan to depart Murfreesboro on June 23rd and return on July 4th, 2012.

We have reserved 3 crews. Each crew can have a maximum of 9 people – one slot on each crew is filled by a staff member from the High Adventure Base and 8 slots are filled by adults and scouts. Therefore, we have a total of 24 slots. We currently have three standbys – if there are others would like to attend, let me know and I will attempt to get another crew for us. Service Opportunity - The 4th Annual Red Kettle Craft Fair
The Boy Scouts were so helpful last year. We would really appreciate their assistance again this year. The 4th Annual Red Kettle Craft Fair is set for Saturday, September 24th from 10 am - 5 pm at 1137 West Main Street (The Corner of West Main Street and Highway 99/New Salem Highway). We could use help starting at 7:30am to assist our vendors with unloading and getting to their items to their booths. We can also use assistance in the afternoon starting at 4:30, but the most crucial need is in the morning.

October Camp Out
We will attend District Camporee October 7-9 at Latimer High Adventure Base. There will be canoe races, rappelling and other events. Patrols will plan their own menus and cook as a patrol. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board.

Eagle Service Project – This Saturday
Matthew Wells needs volunteers to work on his Eagle Project this Saturday, 8/27, from 8:00 until 12:00 at McFadden School on Bridge Avenue. All help is appreciated and welcomed. I have the mulch I need for my project. I am planning to work this Saturday. I wanted to work in the morning, but I have band practice Saturday morning so I’m going to start at 2pm at Bradley Academy. BSA SWIM TEST TONIGHT!
ASM Jon Doliana will be the Sportscom Indoor Pool at 7:00 PM tonight, Thursday, Aug. 11 at 7:00 PM. He will administer Swim Tests for those who need one and he would be willing to pass scouts off on any remaining aquatic requirements for rank or merit badges.

August Camp Out
The troop white water weekend is this weekend August 12 - 14. Scouts needing a ride should be at the Eagle’s Nest at 4:30 PM. Mr. Carey, Mr. Ervin and Mr. Meyers will provide rides form those who need one.Families are welcome to participate on this camp out. All adult and youth members of the troop who have passed the BSA Swim Test are eligible to float the river. (Note: in order for registered scouts and adult leaders to be covered by BSA insurance, they must pass the BSA Swim Test - regardless of the type of water craft they use, to include those rented from Hiwassee Outfitters) The troop will camp in Gee Creek Overflow Campground on the Hiwassee River near Benton, TN. Porta-potties are available in the campground and showers are a short walk away in the main campground. We will cook as a troop so no patrol menus are required. Cost will vary depending on the type of water craft from $20 to about $50. We have budgeted $ 20 to cover food (Sat. breakfast, lunch and supper: Sun. breakfast, and lunch) and camping fees to which you should add the cost of your water craft. We will provide breakfast, lunch and supper on Sat. as well as breakfast and lunch on Sunday. (We can adjust the food and camping cost if you let us know ahead of time if you plan to leave early. Plan to arrive no later than 7:30 AM EST if you plan to float on Saturday. The float is about 6 river miles and takes 4 to 5 hours to float. We try to get off the river by 4:30 PM EST on both days. Bring sunscreen and water bottle and avoid cotton clothing. Wear lace up shoes (old athletic shoes are good), the rocks are sharp and the current will suck off crocks and flip flops.

Generally, those renting from Hiwassee Outfitters choose to float on Saturday only due to the cost of equipment and the fact that younger participants are pretty tired after a day on the river.

First year scouts and non-registered family members will run the river on Saturday in a water craft of their choice obtained from Hiwassee Outfitters. Should you choose to float on Sunday, you will make your own arrangements with the outfitter. Non-registered family members are not required to take the BSA Swim Test, but parents should use discretion as far as floating the river with younger children. This river does have a swift current and 55 degree water temperatures. I strongly urge that all participants be able to swim well enough to self-rescue if necessary. The following costs from Hiwassee outfitters are for one day rentals only: Sit-on-Top Kayak $ 30.00/person, 1 person Funyak (Inflatable Kayak) $30/person, 2 person Funyak $24.00/person, 4,5, or 6 person rafts are available $18.31/person or $73.20 per raft minimum. PFD’s (life jackets), paddle and a shuttle to the put-in are included. More info on watercraft is available at http://www.hiwasseeoutfitters.com We will pay Hiwassee Outfitters by troop check on Saturday to avoid paying sales tax.

Please check out with an adult leader before you depart on Sunday – every year we end up trying to locate a scout who has already caught a ride home.

Due to equipment limitations, we have the following guidelines for BSA equipment. Sign up for a canoe for your 2nd and 3rd year on the river. Sign up for a kayak if you have two years Hiwassee experience in a canoe or one year and canoeing merit badge or have attended the kayak phase of the BSA paddling Clinic. If in doubt, see Mr. Warren. BSA Canoe $27.00 or $13.50/person if tandem, BSA Kayak $17.00/person (this is the cost for a 2 day weekend rental – you will pay this regardless if only choose to paddle one day). PFD’s, and paddles are included, in addition, helmets are provided for kayakers. Troop kayaks are provided on a first come basis. Canoes and kayaks will float the river on Saturday and Sunday. Only registered scouts and adults can use the BSA equipment due to insurance concerns.

Directions to Gee Creek Campground, 404 Spring Creek Road, Delano, TN 37325

Take I 24 East to Chattanooga. Go north on I 75 toward Cleveland & Knoxville. Get off I 75 at exit # 20 (Hwy 64 bypass). Turn right at the top of the ramp on Hwy 64 bypass. On bypass go 6 miles to Ocoee Exit (Highway 64 East). Turn right onto Hwy 64 East to Ocoee (approximately 13 miles) to Hwy 411 North exit (Maryville exit).At the exit stop sign, turn left on Hwy 411 toward Maryville, Benton & Etowah. Go through Benton (well known in the past for its speed traps!). Continue on Hwy 411 about 6 miles and cross the Hiwassee River bridge. Approximately 1/4 to ½ mile after crossing the river go past the Cowboy Restaurant (now closed) and turn right on Spring Creek Road at an old antique store (there is a brown sign pointing to Gee Creek Campground). Follow this road until you pass the rangers office. Go about 1/4 mile and then watch for the entrance to Gee Creek Campground on your right. (If you arrive late at night, the gate may be closed, but it won’t be locked) Turn right into the campground then take your first right turn then turn right again into a large field (Overflow/Group camping area). Look for our Troop 398 trailer. Quiet time begins at 10:00 PM, so try to keep it down if you arrive late.

To get to Hiwassee Outfitters, 155 Ellis Creek Road, Reliance, TN 37369, go back out to Hwy 411 and turn left. Go back across the Hiwassee River and turn left on Hwy 30 and go to Reliance (approx. 5 miles). Rafters and Funyakers will be getting their equipment from Hiwassee Outfitters.

Personal Fitness MB
For those of you who have been participating in the personal fitness MB, please note that this coming Monday, Aug 8th, will be your last opportunity to take the final 12 week PT Test. Please make sure that you wear your Class B shirt under your Class A, as well as running shoes. For anyone else who cannot make it this coming Monday night, it will be your responsibility to schedule your physical fitness assessment with one of the Personal Fitness Merit Badge Counselors.

In addition, this last Monday, we completed the classroom portion of the merit badge. There will not be a make-up class for this. If you were not able to make that class, you will need to make sure that you have completely filled out your personal fitness workbook, and schedule a 1:1 meeting with either Mr. Siler or Mr. Lanier. You will be expected to know the answers to the questions within the workbook.

For everyone else who attended this week’s classroom session, please make sure that you have completed and turned in your personal fitness MB workbook to either Mr. Siler or Mr. Lanier. These will need to be reviewed by one of the mb counselors before your merit badge application is submitted and approved. For convenience we have a key safe in the breezeway at the Eagle’s Nest. There are two keys; one for the Eagle’s Nest and one for the restroom. Both are missing! If you have them, please return them!

August Camp Out
The troop white water weekend is August 12 - 14. Families are welcome to participate on this camp out. All adult and youth members of the troop who have passed the BSA Swim Test are eligible to float the river. (Note: in order for registered scouts and adult leaders to be covered by BSA insurance, they must pass the BSA Swim Test - regardless of the type of water craft they use, to include those rented from Hiwassee Outfitters) The troop will camp in Gee Creek Overflow Campground on the Hiwassee River near Benton, TN. Porta-potties are available in the campground and showers are a short walk away in the main campground. We will cook as a troop so no patrol menus are required. Cost will vary depending on the type of water craft from $20 to about $50. We have budgeted $ 20 to cover food (Sat. breakfast, lunch and supper: Sun. breakfast, and lunch) and camping fees to which you should add the cost of your water craft. We will provide breakfast, lunch and supper on Sat. as well as breakfast and lunch on Sunday. (We can adjust the food and camping cost if you let us know ahead of time if you plan to leave early. Plan to arrive no later than 7:30 AM EST if you plan to float on Saturday. The float is about 6 river miles and takes 4 to 5 hours to float. We try to get off the river by 4:30 PM EST on both days. Bring sunscreen and water bottle and avoid cotton clothing. Wear lace up shoes (old athletic shoes are good), the rocks are sharp and the current will suck off crocks and flip flops.

We need input from all participants as to which water craft you wish to use. Please make a selection on the sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board or reply to this email. This will allow us to make reservations with Hiwassee Outfitters and pick up adequate equipment from council. Generally, those renting from Hiwassee Outfitters choose to float on Saturday only due to the cost of equipment and the fact that younger participants are pretty tired after a day on the river.

Directions to Gee Creek Campground, 404 Spring Creek Road, Delano, TN 37325

Take I 24 East to Chattanooga. Go north on I 75 toward Cleveland & Knoxville. Get off I 75 at exit # 20 (Hwy 64 bypass). Turn right at the top of the ramp on Hwy 64 bypass. On bypass go 6 miles to Ocoee Exit (Highway 64 East). Turn right onto Hwy 64 East to Ocoee (approximately 13 miles) to Hwy 411 North exit (Maryville exit).At the exit stop sign, turn left on Hwy 411 toward Maryville, Benton & Etowah. Go through Benton (well known in the past for its speed traps!). Continue on Hwy 411 about 6 miles and cross the Hiwassee River bridge. Approximately 1/4 to ½ mile after crossing the river go past the Cowboy Restaurant (now closed) and turn right on Spring Creek Road at an old antique store (there is a brown sign pointing to Gee Creek Campground). Follow this road until you pass the rangers office. Go about 1/4 mile and then watch for the entrance to Gee Creek Campground on your right. (If you arrive late at night, the gate may be closed, but it won’t be locked) Turn right into the campground then take your first right turn then turn right again into a large field (Overflow/Group camping area). Look for our Troop 398 trailer. Quiet time begins at 10:00 PM, so try to keep it down if you arrive late.

To get to Hiwassee Outfitters, 155 Ellis Creek Road, Reliance, TN 37369, go back out to Hwy 411 and turn left. Go back across the Hiwassee River and turn left on Hwy 30 and go to Reliance (approx. 5 miles). Rafters and Funyakers will be getting their equipment from Hiwassee Outfitters.

College of Commissioner Science (Adult)
The Fourth Annual College of Commissioner Science will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 8 am until 4:30 p.m. at Brentwood United Methodist Church. The course is advanced training program where our council's commissioner staff offers a rich variety of courses designed to help you further develop leadership, communications, management, and Commissioner skills in order to improve your ability to serve youth.The tuition will be $25 for the day and will include a light breakfast and lunch. Merit Badges

Eagle Court of Honor
Everyone is invited to Tyler Honey’s Eagle Court of Honor at 2:00 PM this Sunday, July 7th at St. Mark’s.

Troop Meeting
There will be a troop meeting on July 11th. Patrols will have an opportunity to plan their menus for the Great Patrol Cooking Contest which will be held at Sat. Supper at the July Camp Out. I won’t be at the meeting since I’ll be attending a week of Summer Camp with my two grandsons in NC. If you need a SM Conference, see Mr. Taylor or Mr. Dix.

July Camp Out
July’s camp out will be at Training Area 4 at the Smyrna Army NG Training Center. The camp site will be on the shore of Percy Priest Lake where the old Air Base recreational beach used to be. We’ll have canoes and kayaks. Be sure to bring your fishing tackle. The Great Patrol Cooking Contest will take place at Sat. Supper. Winning patrol participants will receive a prize!

Directions: From Murfreesboro, Travel North West on Hwy 41 and exit on Nissan Blvd (Hwy 102) and follow it to the Airport entrance. Exit off Sam Ridley, Hwy 266 left onto Fitzhugh Boulevard at signs to Airport and Tennessee Army National Guard Training Center. Go to guard gate, show photo ID, Identify yourself as a member or guest of Boy Scout Troop 398 and ask for directions to Rally Point Training Area 4, Beach area.

Youth Whitewater Paddling Clinic – July 30 - 31
Time is running out to sign up for the BSA Whitewater Paddling Clinic. Classes are organized according to skill levels from novice on up. This is a good opportunity to hone your paddling skills prior to the Troop Whitewater weekend August 12-14. So far Mitchell Jacobs, Cole Ott and Ross Hopkins have signed up. Several of our adults will be attending as instructors and support staff.
Here’s the information on the training:
The Middle Tennessee Council, BSA is hosting its second annual Youth Whitewater Paddling School, which will be instructed by TSRA trained instructors.
The instructors for this school have over 30 years of collective paddling experience.
Kayaking Prerequisites:

3. 1st Class Scout (if applicable)

TROOP MEETINGS
We will not have a regular Troop meeting on June 13 and June 20 due to summer camp. We will have a PLC on Monday, June 20th, at 7:00 PM at the Eagle’s Nest. Our next regular troop meeting will be on June 27th. No meeting on July 4th.

SUMMER CAMP
CHECK IN TIME: We are to be at the Camp Stahlman parking area NOT LATER THAN 1:50 PM on Sunday, June 12.

Your Options: Meet at St. Mark's Eagle's Nest at 12:15 to 12:30 PM on Sunday, load gear on the trailer (we will take the trailer up to the campsite, so you won't have to carry your gear in from the parking area) and ride up in an auto or the church van, if needed. Transportation will depart not later than 12:50 PM. Your other option is to go up to Stahlman on your own and be prepared to carry your gear in from the parking area (about 1/4 mile). In any case, you must be in the Stahlman parking area by 1:45 PM unless you let Mr. Warren know that you will be arriving late. If you choose this option, we suggest you load your scout’s gear in the troop trailer – it will be unlocked by 11 AM on Sunday.
Please reply to this email as soon as possible if your scout will need a ride to camp on Sunday.
Classes are usually complete by 4 PM on Friday. The closing campfire at 7 PM Friday night is optional. If you want to drive up and pick up your scout on Friday afternoon, that's fine. If you want to eat supper on Friday as your scout's guest, let me know this Sunday so I can let the dining hall know. During the week, if you want to eat a meal at camp, meal tickets are available at the Crippled Crab ($5 Breakfast, $6 Lunch & $7 Dinner). I think we will eat breakfast at 7 AM, lunch at 12:05 PM and dinner at 5:30 PM. We will break camp Friday afternoon. I need to know if your scout needs a ride back to Murfreesboro or if you plan to take him home from camp before Friday. Please E-mail this info to me as soon as possible.
We traditionally have dinner in our campsite on Thursday as a special treat. Richard and Katie McAdams are coordinating this effort again this year. If you want to help with that, contact Richard or Katie at mcadamsrktw@comcast.net or Richard at 416-3661.

Merit Badge fees and COPE fees were paid as part of your registration fees. When we go to camp, you will want to have money to pay for any special activities. Tokens are purchased at the Trading Post for the following activities:
Muzzle Loading $10, Recreational Motor Boating $12/day, Recreational Rifle Shooting $2/10 shots, Recreational Shotgun Shooting $3/5 shots, Recreational Water Sports $10/day. Bring at least $5/day for the Trading Post. It has sodas, ice cream, T-shirts, meit badge books and all kinds of stuff. Also Mr. Harden can take orders for worms or crickets if you need them. Bait will probably cost $2 -- $4 per container. Mr Horne will be our Troop Banker and Pharmacist. He can lock up your money for you and give it out as you need it. Please put your money in an envelope with your name and instructions for giving it out i.e. "$5 per day" or "as requested." Please enclose small bills as we will not have any change with us. It is also a good idea to leave a second key to any locks or the combination with Mr. Horne in case they get lost.

Water is very important. If you don't drink enough, you will become dehydrated and get sick. Adults will monitor first and second year campers very closely to make sure they are drinking water. We will have ice water and Gator Aide in the campsite. We have a really nice shower house, please do your part to keep it clean. There is no reason that you can't take a shower each day - I really don't care how bad you smell, but a shower is the best time to check for ticks especially around your private parts! If you check daily, they will come right off - if you put it off for two days or more it may require a trip to the hospital and a group effort to remove the tick!

Bring a day pack, with a canteen or quart bottle of water, scout handbook, compass (if you have one), rain gear, pencil or pen and paper or notebook, and merit badge book. You should keep your day pack with you all day.

Shorts & T-shirts will be worn for processing on Sunday. Have your swim suit handy. If you have not taken a Swim Test this spring, you will be required to take a swim test on Sunday. The Staff may select scouts at random to spot check the pre-camp swim qualifications.

Patrol Leaders make sure members of your patrol have picked a tent mate (2 scouts per tent) before we leave the Eagle’s Nest- we will want to know which scouts are sharing tents before we get to camp. After Sunday, all visitors must sign in at the Crippled Crab when you come on to Boxwell Reservation. If you must pick up your scout before Friday afternoon, you must complete an early release form. If possible, give this to me before we leave for camp.

If you are not arriving at camp at 1:50 PM on Sunday with the rest of the troop, Camp Boxwell requires that I turn in a written explanation signed by a parent and myself when we check in. This is part of their security measures. Parents, if this applies to your son, please get this note to me before we leave on Sunday.

There are no pay phones and camp telephones are limited to emergency use and are located at some distance from our campsite. Do not expect your scout to call every single night! We will encourage first year campers to wait until about Wed. night to call home. Scouts should not need to bring cell phones to camp. There is no place to charge them. If brought they need to be turned off most of the time to conserve the battery. Do not take them to class. I will not be responsible for 28 scouts running up time on your son's cell phone. If you (parent) need to know something, I will call you. If you need to call, my cell phone is 473-7076. Please do not come up to get your home sick scout early with-out talking to me first. Give us a chance to resolve the problem.

We are going to camp to enjoy the great outdoors. Please leave your electronics at home. Camp is not a good environment for electronics and the scoutmaster will not be sympathetic!

Please do not forget your Class A uniform and try to bring at least one pair of green (olive) shorts - no "surfer shorts" will be worn to meal formations. Wearing of Troop caps and neckerchiefs will be encouraged this year. Bring insect repellent. (Spray socks and legs before leaving camp to discourage ticks.) I prefer the long scout socks because the bug spray stays on them longer than on my skin. Closed toe shoes must be worn outside of the campsite. If you are taking Swimming or Life Saving Merit Badge or COPE, bring long pants and long sleeve shirt. Bring work gloves for COPE.

Our Troop Contact here in Murfreesboro will be Mike Holtman (C) 686-7372 or mike.holtman@yahoo.com . He can relay messages or arrange for gear or clothing to be delivered to camp assuming we have someone driving up that day. Mike will be available at 12:00 PM Sunday at the Eagle’s Nest if you still have fees to pay.

Additional Troop T-shirts, hats, neckerchiefs and mosquito nets will be available on Sunday at the Eagle’s Nest.

Be sure to use a laundry marking pen or some other method to mark your Troop T-shirts, Uniform shirts and any other clothing or gear that could be mixed up with someone else's. We always have a lot of unclaimed gear and clothing at the end of camp - especially socks! No one seems to want to claim socks - probably for good reason!!!

Driving directions to Boxwell reservation: Take Hwy 840 toward Knoxville to the Highway 109 exit . Follow hwy 109 toward Gallatin. Cross Interstate 40 and travel north 9.2 miles. Turn left at Boxwell Reservation sign and the road runs into Boxwell Reservation. Turn left at the stop sign at the Crippled Crap and follow the signs to Camp Stahlman. From the Stahlman parking area follow the asphalt road past the left side of the Dining Hall. Look for site 16 in the wood line to the left of the road.

Healing Fields--Sat. May 28th, Sun. May 29th and Mon. May 30th.
Location--Medical Center Parkway--vacant lot near Belks.
Time--There are 2 hours time slots available every day. They are all open as of now.
The Fields open at 9:00am and close at 9:00pm each day.

The Scouts will be runners--placing purchased American Flags at a specific location on the field, taking people to the location of their purchased flag(the flags will have a tag on them) and to retrieve the flags on Monday belonging to the person who purchased them.

Andrew Bailey's grandfather passed away Thursday May 12th. He was 82. He was taken by cancer. This was my dad. His name was Jack B. Britt.

It's been a pretty "busy" month. My wife finished up her Master's Degree, my daughter graduates high school, Andrew has a birthday Tuesday 17th, house smashed by a tree, car buried by the house, ( still have wife's Maxima in the garage and can't get to it ) dad / grandfather passing away.... we're trying to see how much excitement we can cram into one month!

We are in a rental property back in the older part of Brentmeade, so at least we have a roof over our head now. If we can just get the insurance company moving. I'm convinced of something. We all know that we live and do things on God's time, not ours. After that, comes the insurance company! We do things on their time too!!!

Summer Camp

Adult Leadership – Mike Warren, Dennis Harden, Brett Barrett, Dorsey Horne and Jeff White will be in camp all week. Other adults who want to spend some time at camp are welcome. We will need to have your Health form on file and I will need to let the dining hall know if we have extra folks for the meals.
If you are interested, I need to know when you will be there – which nights and which meals (breakfast, lunch, supper).

Health Forms- Gore Ervin needs to turn in our Health Forms when he goes to the Ten Day Out Meeting next Thursday, June 2nd so they can be reviewed before camp.

As of last Monday we have no forms for:
Ross Hopkins, Samuel Phillips, Jeremy Siler, Justin Siler, Reed Spivey, Braden Henderson and Dorsey Horne. Please try to get these forms (original plus one copy) to Gore or me before Thursday.

Swim Test – The following scouts have not taken the swim test this year:

Mr. Doliana will be at the Riverdale HS Pool on Thursday, June 2nd at 7:00 PM. He is teaching a snorkeling class, but he will work you in for a swim test OR you can take it in Old Hickory Lake on Sunday when we check in at camp.

Summer Camp Uniform - We will wear Class A to the Flag Lowering and Supper each night. Plan to wear your Troop neckerchief and cap. Scout uniform or olive green pants or shorts will be worn – no surfer shorts please!

Closed-toed are required outside of camp.

Class B is (troop or Boxwell or scout tee shirt w/ shorts or pants) is worn to classes.

Socks sprayed with bug spray helps keep the ticks off.

Mosquito Nets - I recommend sleeping under a mosquito net – the wall tents at camp do not have netting. We have nets that can be mounted on your cot – they keep the mosquitos off plus keep the daddy long-legs spiders from dropping on your face in the middle of the night. You can hang it from your tent, but a simple frame lashed to your cot works best.

Summer Camp

Time to get everything in order. We will depart for camp on Sun., June 12th. We will find out our check in time at the Ten Day Out Meeting on June 2nd. Classes will be over by 4 PM on Fri., June 17th – In past years, we have broken camp on that afternoon. There is a closing campfire about 7:30 PM.

Health Forms – Fill out your medical history and have a parent sign then get a medical checkup signed by a doctor. Health Forms should be turned in by May 23rd.

Swim Tests – The next swim test is scheduled for 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 18 at Riverdale Pool. If you don’t take a swim test before camp, expect to take it on Sunday in Old Hickory Lake.

Class schedule – make sure you’ve seen Mr. Ervin to set up your classes.

Final payment of fees are due May 23rd – see Mr. Holtman

May Camp Out
This will be an overnight canoe camping trip May 13 – 15. Plan to meet at the Eagle’s Nest at 5:00 PM on Friday. We will camp Friday night at Long Branch Campround just below Center Hill Dam. The easiest way to find the campground is to follow Hwy 96 then turn left on Hwy 70 toward Alexandria. Turn right on Hwy 53 and continue to I 40. Go East on I 40 to the second exit which is Buffalo Valley/HWY 96. Turn right and follow HWY 96 to Center Hill Dam. At the far end of the dam, turn right on HWY 141. The campground is on the right just below the dam. We will be in campsites 49-52. Mr. Harden will have a supply of hot dogs and buns for Fri. evening. Mr. Harden will purchase the food for everyone and we will break into cooking groups for meals. If the water is too high on the Caney Fork River Sat. morning, we will paddle the Smith Fork Creek. Plan to carry all your gear in the canoes. Canoes and life jackets will be provided. We will break camp on Sunday morning and paddle 5 miles out to the Gordonsville Bridge take out if the water conditions are okay. We should be back at the Eagle’s Nest by 1:30 PM on Sunday.

Currently these are the folks who have signed up – if you plan to take your own canoe or if you plan to have three in a canoe, please email me ASAP so we can get an accurate count on canoes.

National Youth Leadership or Brownsea Training July 17 -23
This is a week-long program designed to provide Scouts with leadership skills and real-world experience. Formerly known as Brownsea, this program integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of Scouting, including teambuilding and wilderness adventure. In order to attend an NYLT course, you must be 13 years of age, have completed the seventh grade, and have earned the rank of a First Class Scout. See Mr. Warren if you are interested.
BSA White Water Paddling Clinic Time is running out if you want to sign up for the Youth White Water Training which will be held July 29-31 at The Hiwassee River. You must be 13 years old, First Class and a BSA Swimmer. More information is on the bulletin board.

Glen Lanier has volunteered to coordinate adult training. The troop will reimburse adults for any fees upon completion of the training. Any adult who has questions about training opportunities should talk to Glen.

We will launch canoes below Center Hill Dam on Saturday morning and paddle about 7 miles to the camp site. Plan to carry all your food and gear in the canoes. We will be talking about packing techniques for canoe camping this Monday night at the meeting. I strongly suggest that you plan to cook as a patrol. We may have to combine patrols into cooking groups Monday night. Canoes and life jackets will be provided. Saturday afternoon the land owner will show us a cave he has on his property and we’ll do some fishing. We will break camp on Sunday morning and paddle 5 miles out to the Gordonsville Bridge take out. We should be back at the Eagle’s Nest by 1:30 PM on Sunday. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. If you can’t make the meeting and have not signed up, Email me so we will know how many canoes to bring.

Savage Falls Backpacking Trip
Last weekend was the perfect weather for backpacking. We had a big turn-out – 39 campers! Lots of rain recently made it a good time to check out Savage Falls.

Regular Troop Meeting This Monday
The troop Planning Meeting scheduled for this Monday has been cancelled. We will have our regular troop meeting.

Dr. Beckman will be doing Summer Camp physicals after the announcements – You must have your BSA Health Form with medical history and medications completed and signed by a parent.

Recently elected OA candidates, Ben Barrett, Luke Clement, Michael Gray, Karl Klaus, Justin Siler, and Michael Zietz will meet with Cristian Quiterio after the announcements.

Chip Akin’s Eagle Scout Service Project
Chip will be doing his Eagle Project this Sat., April 16th at the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro. The time is 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Volunteers will be cleaning vegetation and trash out of the pond. Discovery Center will provide gloves but they said you can bring your own if you want. Wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and or dirty. Chip’s mom will provide lunch. Chip has a waiver that workers’ parents mustl fill out.

Personal Fitness Merit Badge
This MB class will be led by Jon Siler and Glen Lanier. The first Personal Fitness meeting will be held this Monday, April 18 at 7:30pm. We will use a classroom over in the church building. To enter the class, scouts must have 1) printed a copy of the Personal Fitness merit badge worksheet available at http://usscouts.org/mb/mb010.asp, as well as the Personal Fitness MB Book 2) assembled a notebook binder with the worksheet, 3) completed requirements #’s 3, 4 & 5, and 4) no medical/health conditions that would prevent the scout from participating in this 12 week course.
There will be no exceptions for these requirements. Scouts should be ready for class and be prepared to discuss the assigned requirements. This is an Eagle required MB and one that can be very valuable and interesting if done to the established standards. If the scout has not completed the items above by April 18, he will have to wait until the next Personal Fitness MB course is offered.

The next Troop swim test will be on Thursday, April 28th from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Riverdale HS pool.

2012 High Adventure Canadian Canoeing Trek
Reservations have been made at Somers Canoe Base in Minnesota for June 25th through July 2nd. We have reserved three crews, so we can take a total of 24 participants. Currently, we have 21 people signed up, so if you want to go, better add your name to the list and make a deposit. All participants must make a $50 deposit by April 18th to lock in their slot. The next payment will be due in October.

Nashville Sounds Boy Scout Night - July 30th, 2011

Backpacking Camp Out This Friday
We are backpacking at Savage Gulf this weekend, April 8-10. We will be camping on the Savage Falls end of the park. The plan is to meet at 5:00 PM on Friday here at the Eagle’s Nest.

These folks have signed for the campout – If you do not plan to be at the Eagle’s Nest, at 5:00m PM Friday, please contact Traci Pack at orthovol@aol.com . Otherwise we will waste valuable time waiting for you. If you want to link up on Sat. morning, plan to be at the Savage Station Camp Area by 8:30 PM or you are on your own (Trail maps are available at the trailhead)

Please eat supper or bring a sandwich so we won’t need to stop. We will camp Friday night at the Savage Ranger Station campground (Directions below). This is a short walk from the parking lot, so if you can bring a cooler for food for Sat, and then transfer the food to your pack Sat. morning. On Sat. we will hike to Savage Falls Campsite (Directions below). Hike will be about 2 miles for new scouts and about 6 miles for older scouts. Plan your own meals either as an individual, with a buddy or as a patrol. Water is available, but it will need to be treated. Anyone who has polar pure from the last camp should bring it. We can have camp fires and we have several backpacking stoves at the Eagle’s Nest. We will return by 1:00 PM on Sunday. Backpacks, tents and other equipment can be checked out by seeing one of the quartermasters on Friday.

Directions To Savage Ranger Station, 3157 SR 399, Palmer, TN 37365

Option 1: (87 Miles, 1hr. 57min) Take I 24E to Exit 127. Take TN 50 toward Altamont to TN 108. At 108 turn right (south) on 108 through Gruetli Laager to TN 399. Turn left on TN 399, The access road to Savage Ranger Station is about 4-5 miles on left.

Option 2: (76 Miles, 1hr. 45min) Take Hwy 70 to McMinnville. Continue Hwy 70 BR to Hwy 56. Take left on Hwy 8 to Hwy 111. Turn right on Hwy 111. Follow Hwy 111 for approx. 4 miles and turn right on TN 399. In approximately 6 miles, look for the access road to Savage Ranger Station on the right.

Directions to Savage Station Camp Area: On the right side of the Savage Ranger Station, you will find the entrance to Savage Day Loop. Pick up a camping form from the bulletin board, fill it out for the group in your car and put a copy on the dash of your car. Walk .1 miles on the Day Loop Trail and watch for the Savage Station Camp Area on the left.

Directions to savage Falls Camp Area: trail to Savage Falls starts at the Savage Ranger Station and follows a well marked trail across two suspension bridges to the Savage Falls Campsite. From here, it is a short walk to the falls where the stream is also the water source for the campsite.

Swim Test next Monday
We will meet at Riverdale High School pool next Monday at 7:00 PM for BSA Swim Tests. There is no charge for admission. Wear your bathing suits, bring a towel.

Chip Akin’s Eagle Scout Service Project
Chip will be doing his Eagle Project on April 16th at the Discovery Center in Murfreesboro. The time is 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Volunteers will be cleaning vegetation and trash out of the pond. Discovery Center will provide gloves but they said you can bring your own if you want. Wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and or dirty. Chip’s mom will provide lunch. Chip has a waiver that I will show you that workers will fill out.

2012 High Adventure Canadian Canoeing Trek
Reservations have been made at Somers Canoe Base in Minnesota for June 25th through July 2nd. We have reserved three crews, so we can take a total of 24 participants. Currently, we have 23 people signed up, so if you want to go, better add your name to the list quickly and make a deposit. All participants must make a $50 deposit by April 18th to lock in their slot. The next payment will be due in October.

Troop Meeting Monday Night
We will have a regular Troop meeting this Monday. I will still be in South Carolina attending my grandson’s crossover into Boy Scouts. If you need a SM Conference, see Mr. Dix, Mr. Spivey, Mr. Ervin or one of the other leaders. New scouts should meet with Troop Guides David Reagan, Reed Spivey and David Carey to work on your joining requirements. I would like to have a Scoutmaster conference with the new scouts next week. Remember that a $30 deposit for Summer Camp is due March 28th and a $200 payment for the Key West Sailing Trip is also due.

Josh Perkins’ Eagle Scout Service Project
Joshua Perkins will be doing his Eagle Project on April 2nd at Mr. Whitakers work shop. We will be working on the tables that will be going out back of St. Marks. People can e-mail me at MCPERKINS1@bellsouth.net or sign up at the EAGLES nest in the next two weeks. This will take two days to do, but the second day is not confirmed yet.

You will need to pass the BSA swim Test, complete the Canoeing Merit Badge and be physically able to carry a 60 pound pack for up to ¾ mile. The trip will be from 8 to 10 days long. We will travel to Ely, Minnesota by van then paddle into Canada. Cost is estimated to be approximately $1,000. Sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board by March 28th. I will be making reservations for late June or early July on April 1st.

March Campout this weekend
Our March campout is scheduled for this weekend, March 18 – 20. We will camp at Boxwell Reservation at Camp Beany Elam. We will have patrol campsites and cook by patrol. We have reserved the COPE Rappelling Tower for Sat afternoon and Sunday morning. We will meet at 5:00 PM on Friday at the Eagle’s Nest and we will return by 12:30 PM on Sunday. Fishing will also be available in the Wood Badge Pond. Mr. Wiser has promised a memorable feast for Sat. night. We may also take some time to remember and honor Tom Falana. We’re not sure about the costs due to several variables – shouldn’t be over $15, but we’ll let you know.

Summer Camp Notes
Summer Camp will be from June 12 -17(option to break camp on June 18th)
Cost is $185 if you make a $30 deposit by March 28th; $205 for late registration. See Mr. Holtman

Council Camperships are available in cases of financial need – get forms from Gore Ervin – must be turned in to Council by April 1. No one misses camp because of money in this troop!

See Gore Ervin as soon as possible to set up your class schedule and insure you get your first choices.

All campers must have a medical exam w/I the last 12 months. This should be done by all registered members whether you attend camp or not. Must use BSA Health Form. Same form required for Key West crews. Save time next year by downloading the PDF form – info can be typed in and saved for next year - http://www.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/whole.pdf

All troop members must take the BSA Swim Test annually. We will schedule Test nights in April and May.

Troop Planning Meeting
We will have a PLC at 7:00 PM next Monday night. New troop leaders should attend. If a Patrol Leader can’t make the meeting, send a Patrol representative. If you need a Board of Review that night, let me know and I’ll pass it along.

Congratulations
Two of our leaders received the Trail of Tears District’s highest award, The Long Rifle, at the annual Awards Banquet. Congratulations to Dane Carey and Jeff White for this recognition of their service to youth in the Scouting Program. In addition, Troop 398 was recognized as a Quality Unit for 2010.

High Adventure 2012
We are planning to travel to Somers High Adventure Base near Ely, Minnesota and spend 8 days paddling in the Boundary Waters and the Quitico Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada. We will make reservations for either late June or early July 2012. The cost will be $1,000 to $1,200. The minimum age is 13 by the date of the trip. Participants must be able to carry a 60 pound pack for ¾ mile and pass the BSA Swim Test. Canoeing merit badge is required for Scouts. Email me if you are interested or sign up on the Interest Survey posted on the bulletin board. Please indicate your preference of dates (late June or early July). This is not a firm commitment – it just gives me an idea of the number of crews we might need when reservations open on April 1, 2011.

Cumberland Merit Badge University This Weekend
Cumberland Merit Badge University is this Sat, Mar 12th. Meet at the MacDonald’s at Memorial and Northfield. Class A uniform is required. Be there at 6:00 AM if you want to grab some breakfast. The church van will be leaving at 6:30 AM sharp from MacDonald’s. Lunch will be provided by the MBU. The van will return to the Eagle’s Nest at about 4:30 PM on Sat.

Folks, we have run into a snag for this weekend's CMBU and need some volunteers to step forward. There seems to be a virus running rampant through Middle Tennessee that has caused some of our Merit Badge Counselors to cancel last minute on us.

New Members
Welcome to new members Kyle Ceder (Star Scout transfer from NC), Braden Henderson and Ty Henderson (Webelos cross overs) and Brandon Poplin (New scout). We also welcome new adult leaders: Carolyn Pray, Ron Henderson , Reid Henderson and Lee Poplin.

OA Elections
Order of the Arrow elections were held last Monday night. Troop members elected six Scouts as candidates for the Order of the Arrow. Those six scouts have been notified by a separate email. They will be called out at a campfire probably in April and attend the Ordeal Weekend June 3 – 5.

Troop Elections
Karl Klaus is our newly elected Senior Patrol Leader. His staff will be announced at the Court of Honor. Our new Patrol Leaders are: Sean Walker, Rattlesnake; Cole Ott, Tiger; Justin Siler, Viper; Spencer Beckman, Pioneer; and Jeremy Siler, Raven. New leaders will take charge on March 14th.

Troop Court of Honor & Summer Camp Information night
A troop Court of honor will be held next Monday, March 14th in the main church. After the Court of Honor, we will show the new Camp Boxwell video. Summer Camp will be from June 12th to June 18th. The fee is discounted ($185) if you register by March 28th and pay a $30 deposit. Regular fee after March 28th is $205. See Mr. Ervin as early as possible so he can get you registered for the classes you want to take – this will give you the best chance of getting your first choices of classes. We will have copies of the BSA Health Form. We will answer all questions on March 14th, so plan to be there.

Key West Sailing Trip
There will be a brief meeting of all those going on this trip after the Court of Honor on March 14th.

March Campout
Our March campout is scheduled for March 18 – 20. We will camp at Boxwell Reservation at Camp Beany Elam. We will have patrol campsites and cook by patrol. We have reserved the COPE Rappelling Tower for Sat afternoon and Sunday morning. Fishing will also be available in the Wood Badge Pond. We will meet at 5:00 PM on Friday, March 18 and return by 1:00 PM on Sunday. Cost will be $15 plus patrol food. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.

2012 High Adventure – Canoeing in Canada
Believe it or not, we have to start our planning for our High Adventure Trek in 2012. We will travel to Ely, Minnesota and canoe from there into Canada for 6 to 8 days and return. I need to get a feel for how many are interested in participating – at this point it is non-binding and no deposit is required. I just need to know how many crew slots to reserve. 2012 reservations open on April 1st. Participants must be 13 years old by the date of the trip and physically able to carry a 60 pound pack for up to ¾ mile. Canoeing MB should be earned by the date of the trip. I will need your preference of dates – late June or early July. Cost will be approximately $1200. I will post a sign up sheet on Monday night

Prayers Needed

Michael Gray’s mother, Judi, has been diagnosed with cancer and is scheduled for surgery on March 11. Please keep Judi, Les and Michael in your prayers.

Tom Falana continues his treatment for cancer. He has finished his current rounds of chemo. Tests have indicated that his bone marrow is clear and he has been cleared to proceed with a bone marrow transplant in March. We really miss Tom and pray for a speedy recovery.

MTSU Merit Badge University

MTSU Merit badge University is this Saturday, Feb. 26^th . Plan to arrive at the James Union Bldg. no later than 8:00 AM. Look for Mr. Horne. Parking is available at the Bell Street Parking Lot. Plan to pick up your scout shortly after 4:00 PM. Lunch at Corlew Hall is included as part of the registration fee. Meal tickets will be provided to scouts and instructors will schedule the lunch times. Mr. Horne has all the waivers in hand. Scouts must be in Class A uniform to participate (MTSU’s rule). Ideally, scouts will have read through the MB book and bring it with them. If prerequisites have not been completed, scouts will need to follow up with a troop MB counselor at our next meeting.

Cumberland Merit Badge University

This is planned for March 12^th. We have an opening for Environmental Science MB if anyone wants to go.

Trail of Tears Volunteer Recognition Banquet

Time is running out for adults to sign up. You must contact Denise Forsburg at Denise.Forsberg@ocharleys.com or 491-8080 by this Saturday if you want to eat supper. The Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, March 5^th at Blackman United Methodist Church. All adult leaders are encouraged to attend and enjoy the food and fellowship. Plan to arrive by 6:30 PM. The meal will be served at 7:00 PM.

The menu is grilled O’Charley’s steak with shrimp, smashed potatoes, salad, rolls and a dessert – all for only $10 per person.

LASER TAG

Laser Tag is this Friday, Feb. 18^th. We will meet at the Eagle’s Nest at 9:30 PM. Bring extra money for sodas and arcade games. The cost will be about $35 for unlimited games between 12 midnight and 6:00 AM. The cost includes pizza. You are not required to wear Class A uniforms – wear a shirt that will not glow under UV light. Guests are welcome. Guests will need to have a parent sign a permission form (attached). Bring it when you come on Friday night. We will return to St. Marks by 7:00 PM.

We need a minimum of 30 signed up to get this price. We are still five people short to make the 30. PLEASE EMAIL ME ASAP IF YOU WANT TO GO BUT HAVE NOT SIGNED UP! Both St. Mark’s vans are reserved. Brett Barrett and Ed Honey will drive the vans but we will probably need a couple of more adults to drive cars also.

Scout Sunday

Many thanks to those who showed up for services at St. Marks. We hada good turn out at both services thanks to those hardy souls who attended both services. We received some very nice compliments from members of the congregation.

Bald in the Boro

Hello everyone!!! As many of you already know, our St. Baldrick’s event – Bald in the Boro – has had to be relocated due to the unfortunate closing of Bobby McKee’s Irish Pub. We are very excited to announce that the event will now be held at Lanes, Trains and Automobiles Entertainment Depot!!!!!!!! For all of those that have been there before, I am sure you will agree that it is a great place to have our event. There is plenty of shave space just outside Good Time Charlie's, the restaurant and bar, as well as lots of recreational activities for children and adults after the event. Dr. Jeremy Harrison, Kaylee's Pediatrician at MMC is going to have his head shaved at a St. Baldrick’s Foundation event on March 11, 2011 at Bobby McKee’s Irish Pub at Stones River Mall in Murfreesboro. With his bald head, he’ll honor two local kids who have fought the cancer battle, Evan Anderson and Hunter Jones. But that’s not the main reasonhe has chosen to do this....the most important reason is to raise money to fund life-saving research and, in the end, someday find a cure for childhood cancers. Jeremy has asked me to be the treasurer for this exciting event and help him in this amazing effort.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation started in 2000 with the idea of “Shaving Our Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer.” Since that time, the foundation has raised over $90 million that goes to promising research in the area of pediatric cancer. In August of 2009 Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital researchers received grants for $380,000 to further research for AML-leukemia and Ewing’s sarcoma. St. Baldrick’s strives to fund research projects in areas where their donations originate. With 1 out of 5 kids not surviving their battle, it’s our desire to keep the funds coming in and the research moving forward.

Last year Dr. Harrison participated in a fundraising event for St. Baldrick’s in Atlanta. He let his hair grow out a little bit, sought out sponsors and then ‘braved the shave” in support of kids fighting cancer. This year, with the help of others at MMC, he is bringing a St. Baldrick’s event to Murfreesboro. So far several teams have been recruited - McFadden Mustangs, Central Magnet, MTCS Cougars, NBYG, Bald is Beautiful, Team Black Box and Browns Chapel Elementary, to raise money and join in this “hair-raising experience.” Our goal is to raise $20,000 in the next two months by recruiting others that are willing to “shave the way to conquer kids’ cancer.”

Scout Sunday

I was really disappointed that so few have signed up to attend services this Sunday, Feb 13^th at St. Mark’s. I need at least 16 scouts at each of the two services to be ushers. Looking at my sign-up list, I currently have only 5 scouts signed up for each service. Cub Scouts are welcome to participate!

I would really appreciate a good turn out – we received a huge amount of support from the congregation for our Super Bowl BBQ fund raiser and this is a good way to show them how much we appreciate them. I would be great to fill up a couple of rows at each service with scouts in uniform.

We have eight troop members who will be recognized for earning their God and Country awards:

Ben Barrett, Spencer Beckman, Luke Clement, Conner Ervin, Ross Hopkins, Cole Ott, Jared Did and David Reagan. We want to do this recognition at both services. I would like for these members to attend both services so they can be recognized before the entire congregation.

Conner Ervin will have a prayer during the 8:30 service and Jared Dix will have one during the 11:00 service. (Thanks for “volunteering, guys!)

We plan to set up a display (tent, kayak, etc) in the Narthex – it would be great to have some scouts available before and between services to answer questions and talk about what we do.

Please email me if you plan to attend so I can stop worrying if I’ll have enough scouts. The early service begins at 8:30 AM and the late service begins at 11:00 AM. Hopefully, you can attend at least one service at St. Mark’s and still make it to your own church. Please plan to attend.

Eagle Court of Honor

Daniel Moreland will receive his Eagle Award at a Court of Honor at 2:00 PM this Sunday, February 13^th at Cavalry Baptist Church on Dejarnett Lane. All troop members are invited to attend.

LASER TAG

The date for Laser Tag has been moved to Feb. 18^th. The cost will be about $35 for unlimited games between 12 midnight and 6:00 AM. The cost includes pizza. Guests are welcome. We need a minimum of 30 signed up to get this price. Both St. Mark’s vans are reserved. We will need 2 adults to drive the vans and we will probably need a couple of cars also. Sign up on the bulletin board.

Super Bowl Barbeque

Our eleventh Super Bowl BBQ was a huge success. For the first time, we sold over $10,000 in product! When all the numbers are crunched, we expect to clear about $5,000! Thirty-three scouts sold tickets – just think what we could have done if all 48 scouts had participated! We cooked 1,074 pounds of pork shoulders, 475 pounds of turkey, and 204 slabs of ribs. We have a few pounds of pork and turkey as well as several whole turkey beasts remaining, so if anyone would like it, we can offer you a deal.

We had to cook Thursday, Friday and Saturday to get it all ready. A special thanks to Myron and Steven Noyce and Dennis Harden for cooking on Thursday as well as Friday and Saturday as well.

Thanks to a good turn-out on Sat. and Sun., we were are to have everything ready in time for customers to pick up on Sun. So far, the customers I have heard from have been very complimentary.

SUPER BOWL BARBEQUE

According to Mr. Noyce’s count last Monday night, only SEVEN Scouts had turned in any tickets!!! That’s downright scary! I sure hope a lot of people plan to turn in lots of sales this Monday night. Everyone needs to sell about $100 in order for us to equal last year’s sales. Please get out and sell as much as you can. This is our main fund raiser for the year. Turn in the original of the ticket to Mr. Holtman with any money you’ve collected Monday night. Our meat orders will be based on our numbers Monday night. We always order some extra to cover late orders and customers who walk in on Sunday without a ticket, but we want to keep that as a minimum.

Let me know if you know someone who would donate at least half a pick up load of hickory – split if possible, otherwise we will have to but at load on Wednesday.

We normally have to cook on Friday and Saturday. Myron Noyce, Gary Wiser, Dennis Harden and Mike Warren are planning to cook on Friday 7:00 AM till ? – if you are off on Friday, come on by. Saturday is a busy day – we will be cooking, pulling and weighing the, slicing and weighing the turkey and preparing the Cole slaw and beans. We will need plenty of help to get all of that done. Come on over starting at 8:00 AM and we’ll put you to work. Sunday till 1:30 PM, we need adults to take the money and check orders and scouts to put together the orders and assist customers if they have a lot to take to their cars. We will need to be ready for customers by 9:15 AM on Sunday. A sign-up list is posted or email if you plan to help.

LASER TAG

Laser tag was rescheduled to Feb 18^th. We will meet at the Eagle’s Nest at 10 PM on Friday night and go to Laser Quest in Nashville. The cost is $35/person if we have a minimum of 30 people and this includes pizzas. Guests are welcome. We split into two groups and alternate playing 15 minute games from midnight till 6:00 AM. Scouts will be ready to be picked up at 7:00 AM at the Eagle’s Nest.

MTSU MERIT BADGE UNIVERSITY

Attached is the final Class Roster for the 2011 MTSU MBU and a blank copy of the Waiver/Release and Authorization to Seek Medical Assistance Form. Can you forward this to the parents of the twenty-five (25) scouts on the roster? Dorsey Horne must have the completed forms in his hands prior to the MTSU MBU. Otherwise the scouts will not be allowed to attend class at MTSU MBU.

The parents have the option of completing the forms, scanning the forms and emailing Dorsey the resulting pdf copies at Dorsey.Horne@state.tn.us MTSU MBU is scheduled for Saturday, February 26.

MIDDLE TENNESSEE PHILMONT CONTINGENT

Troop 398 is not planning to attend Philmont until 2013, but the Middle Tennessee Council sends crews each year. Middle Tennessee Council currently has 3 spaces available for the Philmont Contingent, July 10-23, 2011.

Age Requirement: 2011 Philmont participants must be 14 years of age OR completed 8th Grade and be at least 13 years of age prior to participation. Please do not request or expect exceptions. Requirements for Philmont participation cannot be relaxed.

The fee for is Youth $1360 Adult $1190, this includes airfare, hotel, bus, and Philmont fee

CUMBERLAND MERIT BADGE UNIVERSITY

Cumberland University and Walton Trail District of the Boy Scouts of America invite you to bring the scouts from your troop to CUMBERLAND MERIT BADGE UNIVERSITY on MARCH 12, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 3:30 p.m. The campus is located in Lebanon, TN., 30 miles east of Nashville, 50 miles west of Cookeville and 30 miles north of Murfreesboro on I‐40 exit 238.

Check‐in will be held at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center from 8:00 ‐ 8:30 a.m. Registration fee of $15.00 must accompany your registration for each scout and adult. This fee includes lunch, patch and course material. Each scout may select 5 merit badges from the list according to his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th choice. Each troop will receive a confirmation list confirming the merit badge for each scout. The scout then needs to get the appropriate merit badge book, read it in advance and do any pre‐requirements and bring proof of completion with him to the merit badge university if he is to complete the merit badge that day. Some merit badges may not be completed the day of the merit badge university and may be completed later with the approval of a local counselor. There will be an adult class while the scouts are in their classes. Uniform for the day will be CLASS “A”.

Please remember walk on’s cannot be accepted, there is only a limited number of spaces available for each merit badge class. So REGISTER EARLY!

JANUARY CAMP OUT

We will be attending the District Winter Camporee at Camp Tubbs near Rock Island, TN this weekend January 21^st – 23^rd. There’s a good chance of a sub-freezing night of camping to qualify for the second requirement for a Polar Bear patch. Cost will be $20 which includes a patch. We will meet at the Eagle’s Nest at 5:00 PM this Friday. We want to leave no later than 5:30. It will help if you grab a sandwich before we meet – that way we’ll only need a quick stop in McMinnville. We are cooking as a troop so patrols or individuals do not need to bring food. We will camp close to the trailer, so bring warm clothes (layers) + a change of clothes. Add an extra blanket to your sleeping bag. We have a few insulated pads in the Eagle’s Nest if you need one. Bring long johns or sweats to sleep in. We will return between 12:00 and 12:15 PM on Sunday.

Camp Tubbs Driving directions:

Follow Hwy 70 to Woodbury and on to McMinnville. Take the Hwy 70 bypass toward Sparta. After approximately 8‑10 miles watch for a Rock Island State Park sign. Turn left at the sign on highway 136. Continue on highway 136 approximately 5 miles past the entrance to Rock Island State Park and across the bridge over the Caney Fork River. The entrance to Charles E. Parish Reservation (Camp Tubbs) will be the first road on the right. Follow gravel drive past ranger=s house about 3/4 mile.

Here’s our roster – Adults if there is not a note beside you name, I’m assuming you’ll be at the Nest at 5:00 PM and can help transport scouts. Let me know if you have other plans.

SKI TRIP

Troop 538 has invited our troop to go on a ski trip with them January 28 – January 30 at Paoli Peaks. They have a group lodge reserved. Scouts and family members are invited. You do not have to know how to ski - ski lessons for beginners are included. There will be a Snow Sports Merit Badge class. TENN TECH MBU

Tennessee Tech Merit Badge University is this Sat, Jan 22^nd. Meet at the MacDonald’s at Memorial and Northfield. Wear your Class A uniform. Be there at 6:00 AM if you want to grab some breakfast. The church van will be leaving at 6:30 AM sharp from MacDonald’s. The van will return to the Eagle’s Nest at about 5:30 PM on Sat.

We want to sell as much as possible by Jan. 31^st so we will know how much meat to order. We need a few adults to help cook on Friday. We will need lots of help on Sat. and Sunday, Feb. 5 & 6.
